Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Beyond the Battlefield: The Search for World War II’s Missing in Action by DPAA and Its Partners", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

DPAA's mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting for America's MIA service personnel. A goal of the archaeology that DPAA and our partners conducts is to ultimately recover osseous remains and other material evidence to make a legal identification of our nation's missing servicemen and women. This presentation is an overview of current DPAA practice for ensuring best approaches to remote sensing modern materials and aircraft sites, particularly in geographic areas that may not always be governed by best practices or set standards.

A successful investigation strategy of submerged sites is directly related to the nature of the underwater environment and the circumstances of the loss incident. These ingredients create a mission specific approach that’s unique at each incident location. Methodologically, one constant should include a thorough environmental assessment to guide survey parameters. This ensures the most cost-effective and efficient strategies are being utilized to meet the ultimate goal.
