VAFB-2023-03: National Register of Historic Places Evaluation: Prehistoric Sites in Zones 1 and 2, Vandenberg Space Force Base, Santa Barbara County, California

Year: 2023

Summary

This document is an archaeological evaluation Section 110 report. Numerous archaeological excavation projects have occurred on Vandenberg SFB wherein a sufficient amount of data has been obtained to evaluate the eligibility of prehistoric archaeological site for listing in the National Register, but the federal agency eligibility determination was never presented to the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) for consensus determination. The goal of this Project is to provide evaluations to the SHPO to obtain consensus. This report evaluates the eligibility of seven sites in Zone 1 and three sites in Zone 2 for listing in the National Register. Data from each of the 10 sites in Zones 1 and 2 selected for evaluation were collected and reviewed, and the site’s significance was evaluated against the criteria for listing in the National Register. These sites are discussed in numerical order by trinomial in Chapters 5–14.

In summary, six prehistoric archaeological sites are recommended as not eligible for listing in the NRHP which include CA-SBA-705, -3032, -3042, -3044,- 3213, and -3226. However, four archaeological sites are recommended as eligible for inclusion in the NRHP which included CA-SBA-772, -972, -2000, and -3949.
