VAFB-1992-16: Intensive Archaeological Survey for a Proposed Power Line Replacement, Power Plant 1 to MM/LF00-26
Author(s): Karen Osland
Year: 1992
Summary
This document is a report presenting the results of an intensive archaeological surfacy survey conducted by the Cultural Resources staff at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB). The purpose of this survey was to identify cultural resources present within the Are of Potential Effect (APE) of the overhead D-1 Feeder power distribution line replacement project. A total of thirty archaeological sites were identified as being within the APE of the proposed project. The power poles are within the known boundaries of twenty seven of these sites. Twenty of the sires are within the San Antonio Terrace Archaeological District. Sites previously recorded within the district are considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as contributing elements of the district. Three of these previously recorded sites that are within the APE have been formally determined eligible for inclusion in the NRHP as individual properties. They are CA-SBA-1060, 5313, and 1853. One historical site Marshallia Ranch House has been determined ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Sites recorded within the District during this survey are potentially eligible as contributing elements to the District.
Replacement of the power poles within the archaeological sites will not affect these sites as the old pole will be removed and the new poles will be placed in the existing holes. In those sites where it is not feasible to replace the poles, they will be left in place and only the hardware will be replaced. For one site it was possible to reroute the power line to avoid the site.
