National Register of Historic Places Evaluation of the Bay Palms Golf Course Complex North Golf Course (8HI15282; Facility 1183), MacDill Air Force Base, Hillsborough County, Florida

Summary

This evaluation aids MacDill Air Force Base in its management of historic properties under its jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Argonne National Laboratory conducted this evaluation of the North Golf Course (Facility 1183) to assist MacDill Air Force Base in updating and completing their inventory and evaluation of its two 18-hole golf courses. Built in two phases, the North Golf Course (Facility 1183) was constructed between 1950 and 1953. After a 1994 HABS report and later historic building inventories of MacDill Air Force Base’s Cold War Era facilities, the Florida Division of Historical Resources staff requested a re-evaluation of the historic origins of the North Golf Course (Facility 1183) and verification of whether the 1862nd Engineer Aviation Battalion had played a significant role in its construction. Without finding documentary evidence of any direct association, this study determined that it is unlikely that the 1862nd Engineer Aviation Battalion was involved with 1950-53 construction of the North Golf Course because the unit had been deactivated in 1946. Also, Argonne National Laboratory found that the Bay Palms Golf Complex North Golf Course (8HI15282; Facility 1183) does not meet the criteria for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as an individual site or property, nor as a contributing element to a historic district. Therefore, Argonne National Laboratory recommends the Bay Palms Golf Complex North Golf Course (8HI15282, Facility 1183) not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
