Summary

This document is a Section 106 cultural resources inventory for the Union Oil Company of California Santa Maria Basin Pipeline project. This document addresses the potential effects to important cultural resources that are within the project area. Cultural resources inventory identified 28 prehistoric archaeological sites, 1 historic archaeological site, and 9 isolated artifacts. It was determined that 17 of the prehistoric sites were determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The historic site was not assessed for NRHP eligibility because of difficulties obtaining owner access and will be evaluated at a later date. They determined that the proposed undertaking would result in direct impacts to 14 NRHP-eligibly sites and indirect impacts to 3 NRHP-eligible sites as a consequences of ground disturbing activities associated with pipeline installation. Potential adverse impacts would be mitigated through an integrated program of data recovery, avoidance, protection, and construction monitoring by qualified archaeologists. Based on the implementation of these measures, it is concluded that the proposed undertaking will have no adverse effect to NRHP eligible properties.
