A Class III Cultural Resources Inventory of 13.95 Acres of Tonto National Forest Land for the Bureau of Reclamation's Horseshoe-Carefree Seismic Hazard Study, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) is proposing to conduct a seismic hazard study at the Carefree Fault Zone on United States Forest Service (USFS) Tonto National Forest (TNF)-managed land east of the community of Carefree, Arizona. BOR geologists plan to excavate two trenches across the Carefree Fault to collect geological data related to Quaternary-aged earthquakes associated with the fault. The BOR contracted WestLand Resources, Inc. (WestLand), to conduct a pedestrian Class III cultural resources inventory of the project, known as the Horseshoe-Carefree Seismic Hazard Study. The project will not require improve¬ments to existing TNF Forest Service roads, which are wide enough to accommodate the backhoe excavator, but the ground-disturbing nature of the trench excavations and potential impacts to existing trails require a cultural resources inventory to avoid project impacts to historic properties, if present.

For the project, ground-disturbing activities will occur within two adjacent parcels of USFS-TNF land and an access route corridor, which comprise the area of potential effects and the extent of the cultural resources survey area for the project. The APE for the project totals approximately 13.95 acres.
