Subject: Cultural-Historical Resources Assessment for a Portion of the Pillar Point Air Force Station, San Mateo County, California

Author(s): Marie Cottrell

Year: 1985

Summary

This document is a Memorandum for Record regarding a request made by the United States Air Force for a cultural-historical resources assessment at the Pillar Point Air Force Station. The purpose of the assessment was to determine whether the proposed erosion control project would involve cultural or historic properties.

The Pillar Point Erosion Control Project, falling under the purveiw of Vandenberg Air Force Base, proposes to realign an existing road, construct a section of new road, and construct a new parking lot adjacent to an existing lot servicing Building No. 17. Surface runoff from the terrace upon which the base is situated and surf impact to the toe of the cliff have resulted in the erosion of the cliff face abutting the perimeter road and parking lot on the northwest. As a result, the roadbed and parking lot are being undermined and continued use would eventually result in severe degradation of the facilities.

The memorandum presents the records search that was performed and describes the field survey that was conducted on 11 June 1985. Ultimately the assessment concluded that the project would not effect historic properties.
