Part of the Aztec West Ruin: Perishable Artifacts and Pottery from Excavations by the American Museum of Natural History project
Creator(s): Lori Reed
Year: 2006
Summary
Chaco-McElmo Black-on-white, bowl, Accession AZRU-00001, Catalog #827, Morris FS 4274. Analyzed by Lori Reed 2006. Temper is sand and sherd, but based on paste and slip textures the bowl may have been manufactured at Aztec. Bowl is 99% complete with minimal reconstruction with unknown plaster material. Measurements: 22.5 cm orifice diameter, 8.5 cm height. Image AZRU1-825 A: oblique view of exterior showing bowl shape; note the slip-slop over exterior rim edge typical of Chaco-McElmo. Image AZRU1-824 B: closeup of interior base showing use attrition that impacted the painted design. Image AZRU1-824 C: interior view showing design. Recovered from Earl Morris excavation of Kiva Q, Aztec West Ruin. Morris (1924:257) mentions Kiva Q as a comparison to kivas in the West Ruin Annex: "Kiva A.2 is of a different type, but from its similarity to Kiva Q in the main ruin, which is of known Chaco age, it must be considered contemporaneous with Kiva A.1." No other published description of Kiva Q is available.
