Austin Site (1-9)
Summary
This site was chosen for testing and excavation as a result of preliminary survey work conducted in the area by SUNY at Albany in 1974 that suggested there were a series of small camps in the area during the Archaic and later periods. The site was initially investigated on July 23, 1975. Investigations conducted between July 6, 1979 and July 23, 1979 were intended to test the hypothesis that Archaic and later period camps existed in this area and to determine the sizes of the site loci and the time periods in which they were occupied. Three loci were originally selected for testing, two of which were ALB337 and ALB338. These site areas were excavated from July 6,1979 to July 23,1979. They were located on agricultural land owned by Hanford Austin near an oxbow channel of the Mettawee River, where water, fish, and other resources would have been available to indigenous cultures. Austin gave permission for field crews from SUNY at Albany to walk the fields, collect artifacts from the surface, and test several loci. Sketch maps illustrate the placement of these loci.
The Austin site was mapped by both the New York Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Museum. Further background information and details of the investigation of this site can be found under Austin Site Documents in the Austin Site Catalog Guide.
