Summary
The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, completed Phase I archaeological survey in association with proposed forestry activities in 28 forestry blocks located in Training Areas 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 19, 23, 24, 26, 27, and 28, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed forestry activities included four pine selection cuts (Blocks 27A06PS, 27B06PS, 28A06PS, and 28B06PS), five pine shelterwood cuts (Blocks 26B06PW, 27B06PW, 27C06PW, 27D06PW, and 28B06PW), nine pine thinnings (Blocks 07A06TH, 07E06TH, 07G06TH, 07H06TH, 07I06TH, 08F06TH, 09E06TH, 10E06TH, and 10F06TH), and ten prescribed burns (Burns 05-B, 05-C, 06-D, 07-B, 07-C, 11-A, 19-A, 23-B, 23-E, and 24-A). The Project Area consists of approximately 464.5 hectares (1147.7 acres) of forestland.
The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the proposed forestry blocks and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Six archaeological sites (44CE0065, 44CE0115, 44CE0496, 44CE0505, 44CE0509, and 44CE0513) and one isolated artifact location (IA-0701) were identified during the survey.
