Cultural Resources Survey of Proposed Pennsylvania Route 166 Bridge 1993

Summary

NPW Consultants, Inc., conducted cultural resource investigations on April 19, 1993 of an area which was going to be disturbed by the construction of the Pennsylvania Route 166 Bridge replacement located in the community of New Geneva, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The study is part of the construction of the Grays Landing Lock and Dam on the Monongahela River at mile 82 near Masontown, Pennsylvania. The principal investigators were Hettie L. Ballweber and Ronald L. Michael. Five 1 x 1-meter test units were excavated by NPW within the project locus and revealed that the limits of site 36FA91 extend beyond its originally defined site boundaries. The deposits appear to be stratigraphically segregated and may be part of a large feature associated with a series of dumping episodes when the New Geneva Potteries were in operation during the 19th century (Ballweber and Michael 1993).
