Surveys at Patoka Lake 1966

Summary

GBL provided the VCP with an electronic catalog entitled “USACE GBL Accession Inventory 11 30 09.” This catalog contained detailed information about each of the investigations within the GBL collection. Because the Patoka Lake investigations did not have individual reports, it was determined that the investigations would be separated based on the information found in the GBL catalog. Therefore, four separate Patoka Lake investigations were created based on the different worksheets within the GBL Microsoft Excel® catalog. Each worksheet was named with the year of investigation, and this was used to name the investigations at the VCP St. Louis laboratory Surveys at Patoka Lake, 1966; Surveys at Patoka Lake, 1976; Surveys at Patoka Lake, 1977; and Surveys at Patoka Lake, 1979. Dates of collection found on the original packaging of the artifacts may not be consistent with the years of investigation, because the investigations were separated according to the information found in the GBL catalog, which divided the investigations by accession numbers. There was no report associated with Surveys at Patoka Lake, 1966, specifically. However, there is a report entitled, “Archaeological Salvage Excavations at Patoka Lake, Indiana” (Munson 1980), which is a compilation of the archaeological research done in the Patoka Lake region until the year 1980. Although there is no reference to this specific archaeological investigation, it is possible that this report encompasses the archaeology performed at Patoka Lake in 1966.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs, box inventories, card stock inserts, document folder listing, GBL catalog, and initial data collection. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.

The Veterans Curation Program utilizes the standard archival practice of unique naming of collections. The purpose of this practice is to avoid redundant and confusing collection names commonly found with archaeological investigations. Therefore, this collection is referred to as “Surveys at Patoka Lake 1966.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folder, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is a quarter of a linear inch. The Glenn A. Black Laboratory of...
