Harry S. Truman Reservoir 1961-1993 Empty Bags
Summary
The Harry S. Truman Reservoir 1961–1993 Empty Bags investigation was created during a project to bring several USACE, Kansas City District collections up to federal curation standards prior to receipt of the collections by the St. Louis VCP. During this project, the original artifact bags were not kept with the associated artifacts. In 2012, the USACE, Kansas City District requested that the St. Louis VCP create a catalog of bag labels. Although all of the investigation’s bags were presumed to be empty by USACE, Kansas City District and St. Louis VCP staff, artifacts were found in several of these bags and necessitated an additional catalog to document the objects (Harry S. Truman Reservoir 1961–1993 Empty Bags Artifact catalog).
Investigations within the Harry S. Truman Reservoir area were initiated in advance of construction activities associated with the building of the Harry S. Truman Dam and Reservoir and continued for almost 15 years beyond the structure’s completion. The Harry S. Truman Reservoir 1961–1993 Empty Bags collection consists of multiple investigations. It is important to note that the collection was initially thought to have included data that was collected between 1965 and 1985. Upon closer analysis, it was apparent that the bags’ collection dates extended to 1961, and final reporting protracted through 1993. Therefore, the VCP recorded the name of the collection to be inclusive of the entire range of dates associated with all of the investigations. Although the VCP prefers to process investigations individually, it was not feasible for this collection. The associated documents, empty bags, and artifacts from the investigations were intermixed with numerous investigation dates and contractors complicating a separation. Therefore, it was decided to process the empty bags as a single collection.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, inventory database, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs, box labels, and scans of empty bags.
