Red Letter Shelter (23JA1703) 2011
Summary
The Red Letter Shelter (23JA1703) is a small rockshelter with associated historic features. The site is located on a southeast facing slope above an unnamed tributary of the East Fork of the Little Blue River in Jackson County. The property is part of Blue Springs Lake, owned by the USACE Kansas City District, and is operated by the Jackson County Parks and Recreation. Due to the fact that vandalism was identified at the rockshelter, Jackson County Parks and Recreation conducted a pedestrian survey in the vicinity of the rockshelter.
A moderately large prehistoric lithic scatter was identified during the survey along with historic features including a stacked limestone chimney, a rock and concrete patio, and rock steps leading to the top of the bluff. It was determined that these features likely date to the early to mid-1900s. Archaeological testing began in July 2011 and continued into August 2011, led by Principal Investigator John Peterson. (Peterson 2011).
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, photographic material spreadsheet, scanned asset key, and select archival and artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, additional archival and artifact photographs, box labels, document folder listing, field notes, initial data collection, and records removal sheets. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
