Walter F. George Sites 1957-1962
Summary
The Veterans Curation Program utilizes the standard archival practice of unique naming of collections. The purpose of this practice is to avoid redundant and confusing collection names commonly found with archaeological investigations. Therefore, this collection is referred to as "Walter F. George Sites 1957-1962.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is six (6) linear inches. The Walter F. George Sites 1957-1962 collection arrived in one acid-free archival box, which was in fair condition. The documents were in fair condition with minimal rust residue, unidentified staining, and some small tears. Acidic tape was also removed from four documents and replaced with archival mending tissue where needed. Mending tissue was also used sparingly on torn documents. Many documents throughout the collection are incomplete and contain no explicit provenance, particularly in the Report Record Series.
There are paper and photographic materials in the collection. There are eight oversized documents (four of which are photographs) that were removed to oversized storage. There are ten black and white glossy photographs in the collection that were removed to photographic storage. About two linear inches of documents were loose in the box. The remaining four linear inches of documents were contained within fourteen acid-free folders in no apparent order. Some level of curation was previously performed on the collection, because there were seventeen plastic paperclips where there used to be metal ones (rust marks are still evident).
It must be noted that throughout Walter F. George Sites 1957-1962 the abbreviation for Clay County, Georgia is Cla or CLA. Since the documents were produced, the official abbreviation for Clay County has changed to CY. Therefore, all curation documents produced in the VCP laboratory use the abbreviation CY at the request of the University of Georgia Laboratory of Archaeology. So, where an original document contains the site number 9Cla1 for the Mandeville Site, all reference documents produced in the VCP laboratory denote the same site as 9CY1.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include archival photographs, finding aid, oversized material spreadsheet, photographic material spreadsheet, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include aerial site photographs, archaeological feature records, archaeological photo records, artifact inventory, box inventories, box labels, budget documents, contracts, correspondence, daily activity reports, document folder listing, field inventory, general feature forms, initial data collection, maps, oversized material labels, payroll documents, personal notes, photographic material labels, records inventory, records removal sheet, sketches, survey documents, and a truck rental receipt. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
