Beaverdam Creek Mound and Village 1980
Summary
This collection is referred to as "Beaverdam Creek Mound and Village 1980.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is one (1) linear inch.
This investigation dates from 1979-1985. The investigation started in 1980, which explains the project name date. The range of dates found throughout the collection also includes background records and the final report. The documents were originally stored in acidic folders in an acidic cardboard box with various collections from the Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area. Metal contaminants were found in the collection, and these were removed. The documents were in good condition otherwise. Personal information was removed from Folder 2/1, which included social security numbers, birthdays of the archaeologists and family members, home addresses, and home phone numbers. The documents were originally lacking a discernible order.
During the investigation of site 9EB85, Native American remains were identified. Scanned assets #2023-0003, 2023-0004, 2023-0005, 2023-0007, and #2023-0018, progress reports and the final report, contain images of human remains. These materials are housed in folders 1/1 and 4/1.
The interim report and the final report were found online at Georgia’s Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System, (www.gnahrgis.org). The Georgia Archaeological Site File Report Number for the interim report is 6574 and the Georgia Archaeological Site File Report Number for the final report is 667. Digital copies of the files were downloaded from the website and saved as part of the digital collection. Each item was assigned an asset number for tracking purposes, but copies were not printed. A folder was created to house the information related to the documents in a Report Records folder (Folder 4/1).
An oversized map of SSI, Site 2 near Beaverdam Creek, scanned asset #2023-0019, became separated from the remainder of the Beaverdam Creek Mound and Village (9EB85) 1980 collection sometime between 2010 and 2012 in the Washington, D.C. and Alexandria VCP laboratories. When the processing occurred in 2012, the map was housed in an oversized flat file in the VCP laboratory and it was labeled “Unknown RBR Map.” The Initial Data Collection Sheet that was created in 2012 did not contain information on the oversized map, and no Initial Data Collection Sheet was found for the processing that occurred in 2010. When the final report was located online in 2013, however, it was observed that the term “SSI” was mentioned throughout the report, and the oversized map was inserted back into the collection. As the original order of the oversized map was unknown, the map was assigned to an oversized record series folder (5/1) and given a scanned asset number.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, original investigation report, oversized materials spreadsheet, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, correspondence, document folder listing, initial data collection, interim report, journal articles, a map, newspaper articles, notes, oversized labels, progress reports, records removal sheet, research proposal, and a safety plan. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
