Kirwan Lake Survey Associated Documentation

Summary

Between June 23 and August 3, 1986, the Cultural Resource Management Program of the Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh conducted a Phase I cultural resource reconnaissance of Federal lands within the M. J. Kirwan Dam and Reservoir. The M. J. Kirwan Dam and Reservoir is located in Portage County, Ohio, on the West Branch of the Mahoning River at the western extreme of the Mahoning River basin. The dam itself is located ca. 32.3 km (20 mi) northeast of Akron, Ohio, ca. 43.3 km (27 mi) west of Youngstown, Ohio, and ca. 59.7 km (37 mi) southwest of Cleveland, Ohio.

The purpose of the Phase I cultural resource reconnaissance was to locate new sites and confirm the presence of previously recorded sites within the study area, and to determine the potential effects on cultural resources that would result from the continued operation and maintenance of the reservoir and its facilities.

Following the methodology described in the Research Design section of the site report, the study area was examined via pedestrian reconnaissance and the excavation of 77 subsurface shovel probes. The 25 sites identified within the study area consisted of surface scatters of artifacts and did not exhibit evidence of subsurface cultural features.

Thirteen of the identified sites in the study area (33PO255, 33PO256, 33PO257, 33PO258, 33PO259, 33PO260, 33PO294, 33PO295, 33PO296, 33PO298, 33PO299, 33PO300, AND 33PO301) exhibited only prehistoric cultural resources. Five other sites (33PO252, 33PO261, 33PO262, 33PO263, and 33PO264) exhibited evidence of only historic period occupation/utilization. Five sites (33PO16, 33PO73, 33PO253, 33PO254, 33PO301) indicated the presence of both prehistoric and historic components. The remaining three sites (33PO71, 33PO72, and 33PO192) yielded no artifacts, although evidence of prehistoric utilization/occupation was recorded from two of three sites (33PO72 and 33PO192) during earlier archaeological investigations within the study area. A total of 137 flaked stone artifacts and 186 historic period artifacts were recovered from the study area and are described in this report.
