ROI001, Final Report of an Archaeological Reconnaissance and Test Excavation, Mounds State Park, Madison County, Indiana, July-August 1979

Summary

This is the tDAR Project page that represents Reports of Investigation 001 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University. This report elaborates on and essentially confirms the findings, conclusions, and recommendations stated in the interim report (Cochran 1979). Significant archaeological remains exist in the portion of construction area A south of the park entrance road, south and west of the pavilion, and in the eastern port ion of area E, in all of which construction should be avoided. In addition construction of the pool in area C poses a threat of serious secondary impacts on the neighboring earthwork group, which must be protected. Finally, investigation of the plowed out earthwork group on the edge of the campground in area E shows that substantial remains still exist that should be protected with an eye to eventual restoration. A number of specific recommendations are made concerning these areas and the park resources in general.
