National Register Testing of Site 41WB933 and Intensive Survey of Seven Retention Ponds in Webb County, TX
Summary
From November 10–19, 2021, AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra) conducted archeological excavations and survey on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in support of the proposed construction of the Hachar-Reuthinger Loop in Webb County, Texas (CSJs 0922-33-165 and 0922-33-166). The investigations entailed the excavation and evaluation of site 41WB933 to determine the site's eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and for designation as a State Antiquities Landmark (SAL). In addition, AmaTerra intensively surveyed seven proposed retention ponds along the Area of Potential Effects (APE). The 41WB933 excavation consisted of the excavation of ten backhoe trenches and ten 1 x 1 m test units, with the test units totaling 3.2 cubic meters of excavated sediment. The survey resulted in the excavation of 92 shovel tests, eight of which were positive for cultural material, and the excavation of three backhoe trenches, all of which were negative for cultural material. The survey identified two sites, 41WB952 and 41WB953. AmaTerra conducted the fieldwork under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 30382.
The 41WB933 excavation produced minimal artifacts and only one buried cultural feature, a rock-lined oven with charcoal that produced dates of 4650 ± 30 and 4680 ± 30 RCYBP, roughly corresponding in age to the diagnostic Val Verde and Tortugas points identified on the surface at the site. Because the 41WB933 excavations yielded few artifacts and only one buried feature, it is unlikely to yield important information regarding prehistoric land use in the Southern Texas Plains. As such it is recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP or for designation as an SAL. The two newly recorded sites, 41WB952 and 41WB953, are both small mostly surficial lithic scatters that represent opportunistic prehistoric flintknapping localities. They are also unlikely to yield important information on the prehistory of the Southern Texas Plains and are both recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP or for designation as an SAL. No further work is recommended at 41WB933 or any of the retention pond locations. Artifacts collected during the 41WB933 excavation and all project-related records will be curated at the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) in San Marcos.
