ROI118, An Archaeological Survey of Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve, Jay County, Indiana

Summary

This is the tDAR Project page that represents Reports of Investigation 118 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University. The Applied Anthropology Laboratories (AAL) at Ball State University conducted a Phase Ia archaeological investigation at Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve (LMNP) with support from a Historic Preservation Fund grant. The primary goal of this research was to further understand the use of Pleistocene marshland by precontact indigenous populations, as wetland use is underrepresented in the Indiana archaeological record.

Research focuses on four survey areas including 21.72 ac (8.79 ha) surrounding White Oak Cemetery (CR-38-20); 17.26 ac (6.98 ha) located in an agricultural field just east of White Oak Cemetery; 33.47 ac (13.54 ha) east of the LMNP parking lot; and 19.13 ac (7.74 ha) located west of the LMNP parking lot.

Recovered artifacts include 868 historic metal, glass, and ceramic objects dating to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and 19 precontact lithic artifacts from Unidentified Prehistoric and Middle Woodland time periods. Twelve features were documented between all survey areas. Fieldwork did not encounter human remains. Cultural periods represented in the artifact assemblage include Unidentified Prehistoric, Middle Woodland, and late nineteenth and early twentieth century Historic.
