Historic Building Inventory and Evaluation for Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa and Walton Counties, Florida

Summary

This effort presents the details and results of a historic building inventory and evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa and Walton counties, Florida. This evaluation aids Eglin Air Force Base in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction, as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The inventory, conducted in March 2024, documented 10 facilities at Eglin Air Force Base and evaluated them for historical significance against the criteria established for listing a property in the National Register of Historic Places. The facilities addressed in this inventory were built between 1955 and 1977 during the Cold War Era, and they fall into three categories: routine base operations and support facilities, armament testing facilities, and armament and explosives storage facilities. As a result of this study, Argonne National Laboratory found that the facilities do not meet the criteria; therefore, all 10 facilities are recommended not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, either individually or as contributing elements to a historic district.
