Archaeological Excavation at the Ferris dune Site (48CR310) (2014)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Brent A. Buenger.

Archaeological excavations at the Ferris Dune site (48CR310) yielded two buried cultural components. Component 1 dated to the Late Prehistoric Uinta phase (950 ± 30 years B.P.), and Component 2 dated to the Late Archaic Deadman Wash phase (1920 ± 30 years B.P.). Component 1 represents a relatively well preserved hunting camp where at least two bison were processed, while the cultural materials associated with Component 2 were appreciably more ephemeral and representative of a nondescript short...

Archaeological Excavation at the Pathfinder Ranch Site (48CR332): A Stratified Multicomponent Site Located Near the Ferris Mountains of Central Wyoming (2014)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Brent A. Buenger.

The excavated cultural deposit at the Pathfinder Ranch site (48CR332) yielded five cultural components dating to the Uinta phase of the Late Prehistoric (Component 1), the Deadman Wash phase of the Late Archaic (Components 1-2), and the Pine Spring phase of the Late Archaic (Components 3-5). The cultural materials recovered from the five components suggests the occupations represent temporally punctuated short-term hunter-gatherer camps likely characterized by large mammal faunal resource...

Archaeological Investigations at the MiniTrue Site (48UT1984) in the Green River Basin, Wyoming (2012)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Richard Adams. Paul H. Sanders. Mark E. Miller.

We summarize here results of a data recovery effort at the MiniTrue site, 48UT1984. Between 1998 and 2000, the Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist conducted testing and excavation at the site on behalf of the Wyoming Department of Transportation. MiniTrue is a Uinta Phase pronghorn processing locale in the Green River Basin, Uinta County, Wyoming. Two components were identified, both being short-term, task specific activity areas. Radiocarbon dates establish the oldest component at about...

Excavation at Four Sites (48SW7456, 48SW7457, 48SW15052, 48SW17323) Within the Bridger Coal Company Underground Mine Lease Area (2013)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Susan Murray. Matthew Kautzman. Stacy R. Goodrick.

Data recovery excavations were conducted during the 2010 field season by Western Archaeological Services at four prehistoric sites located within the Bridger Coal Company Underground Lease area. These sites include the Paired Feature site (48SW7456), the Kindra site (48SW7457), the Jake Roble site (48SW15052), and the North Side Playa site (48SW17323). The project area is located in southwest Wyoming within the Deadman Wash drainage system in the western portion of the Wyoming Basin. The area is...

Hunter-Gatherer Mobility from the Early Archaic to the Late Prehistoric Period: Investigations at the Hogsback Site (48UT2516), a Housepit Site in Southwestern Wyoming (2007)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Summer Moore.

This paper makes use of an in-depth analysis of cultural remains at the Hogsback site (48UT2516), an Archaic housepit site in southwestern Wyoming (see Figure 1), to explore a set of issues relating to hunter-gatherer mobility in the Archaic era. This site, which was reoccupied successively and almost continuously over a period of at least 4,000 years, provides an ample data set against which to discuss such topics as changing settlement patterns and subsistence strategies. In this paper, it is...

Lithic Materials and Fort Bridger (2001)
DOCUMENT Full-Text A. Dudley Gardner. Martin Lammers.

Beginning in 1983, an ambitious research project was initiated at Fort Bridger. From 1983 to 1989, test excavations and archival research identified the possibility Bridger's Trading Post underlay the enlisted men's barracks constructed in 1888 at the Fort. As a result of the test excavations, a team of archaeologists from Western Wyoming College initiated a long-term research project beginning in 1990. The excavations led by this team focused on the area south of the enlisted men's barracks,...

POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR 48SW13552, THE CRESCENT SITE, WYOMING (2006)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Linda Scott Cummings. R.A. Varney. Jaime Dexter.

The Crescent Site, 48SW13552, is a camp site located in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Thirty-seven features were recorded during the excavation of two block sets at the site. A backhoe trench was also placed on a north-south trajectory through the middle of the site. Radiocarbon dating of features indicate three distinct phases associated with the cultural component of the site, which were subsequently identified as the Opal Phase, the Pine Springs Phase, and the Uinta Phase. Thirteen...

POLLEN ANALYSIS OF FOUR HEARTHS FROM THE CUL-DE-SAC SITE, 48SW13648, SOUTHWESTERN WYOMING (2006)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Linda Scott Cummings. Jaime Dexter.

The Cul-de-Sac Site, 48SW13648, is a prehistoric camp in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Six radiocarbon dates, ranging from 1540 to 1900 BP, were obtained from hearth features at the site and indicate at least two occupations dating to the Uinta Phase of the Late Prehistoric period. Four pollen samples were recovered from individual hearths in order to determine possible plant resources available to occupants of the site.

A Popular Spot: Four Thousand Years of Occupation at the Battle Spring West Site (48SW16604) In the Great Divide Basin, Wyoming (2013)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Christopher C. Kinneer.

Excavations for the Ur-Energy Lost Creek Project at the Battle Spring West site yielded remains from multiple occupations extending from the Opal phase through Uinta phase. The excavation data did not reveal evidence of longterm occupation, such as structural elements or semi-permanent, immovable processing tools such as large ground stone implements. Taken as a whole, the site assemblage suggests the archaeological remains are the result of hunting-related activities including camping, tool...

STARCH ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM SITE 48SW16962, WAMSUTTER, WYOMING (2010)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Linda Scott Cummings.

Site 48SW16962, situated south-southwest of Wamsutter, Wyoming, is an open lithic scatter comprised of three cultural features (Features 1, 2, and 3) representing an Uinta Phase occupation. Sediment samples from each feature were submitted for starch analysis to identify starchy foods cooked in these features.

Varieties of Corner-Notched Arrow Points In Wyoming (2021)
DOCUMENT Full-Text David Eckles.

An examination of corner-notched arrow points in Wyoming is presented. Emphasis will be on points commonly included in the Rose Spring/ Rosegate series with an analysis of other cornernotch arrow points which are probably not part of the Rose Spring/Rosegate series. Data were gathered from both excavated and dated components as well as from surface recorded sites in Wyoming. These data were searched in the Wyoming SHPO Cultural Records Office databases from the early 1970s through 2014 (the 2014...
