Differentiating Between Human and Non-Human Predation of Small Mammals in the Archaeological Record (2006)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Marit Bovee.

Small mammal remains, rodents, lagomorphs and insectivores, are commonly found within archaeological sites. However, presence does not equate to cultural use. Small mammals can become part of the archaeological record because of natural death, pitfalls, raptors and mammalian carnivores; as well as human use. Here these processes are compared and three main criteria are suggested for differentiating the cultural from non-cultural processes – environmental, archaeological context, and bone...

DOCUMENT Full-Text Joshua L. Tatman.

The goal of this paper is to add to the shallow base of data on taphonomic processes affecting small mammal remains in archaeological contexts. To that end, faunal assemblages from two sites, the Rabbit Bone Cave, and the Wolf Den Cave will be compared. For the purpose of this project, only leporid remains will be compared. Both Lepus sp. and Sylvilagus sp. remains will be analyzed in this project. The comparisons made in this paper represent an attempt to differentiate between assemblages of...

Hunter-Gatherer Canid Petroglyphs in the Wind River and Bighorn Basins of Wyoming (2001)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James J. Stewart.

Big game, large bird, and canid (dog/wolf/coyote) figures are the most obvious zoomorph petroglyph motifs in the Bighorn and Wind River Basins. Canid petroglyph motifs, with many apparently dating 2000-6000 B.P., or possibly older, tend to prevail in specific areas of the southern Bighorn and northeastern Wind River Basins. The geographic distribution of these canid motifs appears to be more than coincidental. Examination of known/recorded Wind River and Bighorn Basin canid motif petroglyph...

IDENTIFICATION AND AMS RADIOCARBON DATING OF CHARCOAL FROM THE RED GULCH SHELTER (48BH4058) AND THE SOUTH OWL CREEK SHELTER (48HO327), WYOMING (2009)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Kathryn Puseman.

Charcoal samples from the Red Gulch Shelter (48BH4058) and the South Owl Creek Shelter (48HO327) in the Bighorn Basin of north-central Wyoming were submitted for identification and AMS radiocarbon dating. Archaeological investigation of the rockshelters revealed historic and possible Archaic occupations. Identification of the charcoal contributes information regarding wood burned as fuel in the rockshelters and assists in selecting the most relevant charcoal to date.
