Sunset Crater is the youngest cinder cone in a cluster of Quaternary volcanoes at the northeastern edge of the Pliocene to Holocene (5 Ma to Recent) San Francisco Volcanic Field. The area near Lizard Man Village east of Flagstaff might have been used extensively or intermittently as an agricultural area. Fill from the probable floor of a circular, semi-subterranean pithouse at site AR-03-07-03-355 was examined for pollen and macrofloral remains. This site represents multiple occupations of the area over time. Diagnostic artifacts reflect early to late Archaic occupations. Formative period structures, including a late Pueblo II habitation/room block, also are present at the site. Study of 23 pollen samples associated with archaeological sites in the Walhalla Glades district of Grand Canyon National Park yields surface sample data not consistant with prior research, possibly because the samples are actually of sediment deposited during the period the sites were occupied. Pollen record suggests local prehistoric cultivation in a paleoenvironment quite distinct from that presently occurring in this district.
