In recent years, the scenario of Inka conquest in the Quebrada de Humahuaca includes different social landscapes that can’t be explained by traditional positions. These new perspectives have been improved by contributions from other regions of Northwestern Argentina and Collasuyu. In the case of Quebrada de Humahuaca, a region with a lack in early historical sources, the archaeological visibility of processes of social dynamics and handcraft production requires constant methodological...
Real Alto and the Origins of Valdivia (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Recent geomorphological analysis of shoreline deposits in Manabí and Santa Elena provinces (Ecuador) provides evidence of significant mid-Holocene marine transgression. Newly obtained radiocarbon dates from relict coastal features places these changes to the Valdivia Phase (4400 to 1500 cal BC). Arguments for and against this phenomenon are reviewed with...
Really ugly Nasca pots of ancient Peru, and why they are important. (2017)
Polychrome ceramics of the Nasca culture (south coast of Peru, c. 100 BC - AD 600) are world renowned as one of the most colorful and artistically complex creations of the ancient Americas. Up to ten distinct colors depicting fabulous supernatural creatures adorn unique vessel forms with eggshell thin walls fixed in perfect oxidizing firings. Such masterpieces fill art books and spawn enthusiastic but fanciful speculations about Nasca society and its artisans. This paper rounds out the view of...
A reappraisal of cranial shape among prehistoric South Americans and its implications for the peopling of the New World (2016)
Recent studies of South American populations have played an integral role in elucidating the timing, origin and migration routes of the first Americans. Much attention has centered on the cranial shape of these prehistoric populations, which some researchers have described as having two distinct head forms. The cranial shape of early Holocene Paleoamericans has been categorized as dolichocephalic (long-headed), while later populations have been generally described as brachycephalic...
Reassessing the Late Andean Period in the Moche Valley: the View from Cerro Huancha (2015)
In this paper I review the history of thinking about the Late Andean Period in the Moche Valley and present recent research from the site of Cerro Huancha, a large center located in a tributary of the Moche River in the chaupiyunga ecological niche. Encompassing the duration of the Inca and Chimu Empires, AD 1000 – 1532, the Late Andean Period was a time of change in political power and Cerro Huancha provides insight to how these two empires administered and interacted with populations in the...
Recent Advances on Multidisciplinary Research at Castillo de Huarmey (2017)
The Peruvian site of Castillo de Huarmey located on the desert coast some 300 kms north of Lima and 4 kms east of the Pacific Ocean, is widely known for the 2012-13 discovery of the Middle Horizon imperial mausoleum with the first undisturbed Wari high elite women’s multiple burial. The tomb, which concealed 64 individuals was accompanied by an abundance of valuable grave goods such as gold and silver jewelry, fine pottery, religious paraphernalia, and textile production materials and tools....
Recent Archaeological Research in Gorgona Island, Colombia (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This research, framed within the problematic environmental archaeology, aims to see the environments used by pre-Hispanic settlers from the analysis of plant and animal remains. Zooarchaeological analyses of invertebrates describe a rocky, sandy, mixed intertidal environment typical of the Pacific Ocean. In the case of vertebrates, a lizard element...

A Reconsideration of Mold Made Ceramics in Costal Ecuador: Chorrera and Jama Coaque (2017)
Based on an examination of ceramic Chorrera, Jama Coaque and La Tolita figurines from the coast of Ecuador, this talk discusses the central role of the mold as both a forming technique and as a means to create a stable visual tradition from generation to generation. It will also suggest the impact on later traditions on the coast, such as the Moche tradition.
Reconsidering Farming and Foraging in the Pre-Moche World (2017)
This paper examines the relationships between food, identity, and social inequality on the Prehispanic Peruvian North Coast through a paleoethnobotanical perspective. We reconstruct household culinary practices to address the roles that food played in the migrant experience of highlanders that settled in a traditionally coastal river valley. This migration occurs just prior to the consolidation of the Southern Moche polity, one of the earliest state polities in the Americas and characterized by...
Reconstructing a Recuay Feasting Event at Hualcayán, Peru through Ceramic Analysis (2015)
Although research of the Recuay Culture has heavily focused on the practices and materials of Recuay feasts, these studies are limited to a few archaeological sites. Consequently, the variation of Recuay feasting practices between communities in highland Ancash is still unclear. This poster presents a typological and spatial analysis of Recuay ceramics excavated from the archaeological site of Hualcayán to reveal the local ritual practices of food preparation and consumption during the Early...
Reconstructing Andean pasts: archaeology, biology, or ethnohistory? All of the above, please. (2016)
Over the last several decades Andean archaeology of the late prehispanic through early Spanish colonial periods has grown to the point that critical reassessments of ethnohistorical materials and the anthropological models constructed from them are not only possible but necessary. Taking as a premise that language and material culture are primary transmissions of cultural life through time, this presentation summarizes recent archaeological research in Cuzco, Huamachuco, Pachacamac, and...
A Record of Changing Pulses and Pathways of Interregional Interaction from Manachaqui Cave in the Northeastern Peruvian Cloud Forest (2018)
Results from analyses of deep, stratified cultural deposits excavated at Manachaqui Cave (3,620 m) in the ancient Chachapoyas region provide a "window" on changing patterns of interregional interaction in Peru’s northern ceja de selva. Located beside a pre-Hispanic paved road, the rock shelter accommodated mobile foragers, cultivators, travelers, and llama caravans moving through networks connecting societies north, south, east, and west. Despite several chronological gaps, Manachaqui’s sequence...
Recovering the iconography of the one snuff tray ever collected in Tiahuanaco (Bolivia) (2017)
The Musée du Quai Branly holds a snuff tray allegedly from Tiahuanaco. It was collected by the geologist Georges Courty during the archaeological excavations conducted on the site by the French Scientific Mission to South America in 1903. The wooden artifact, with inlays of turquoise and metal, is delicately sculpted in low relief, perforated and engraved. Its fragmentary condition has restricted its analysis. A study and conservation plan enabled the recovery of its shape (trapezoidal) and...
Recruited or Annexed Lineages: A Chemical Analysis of Purén and Lumaco Pottery and Clays (2016)
The Purén-Lumaco Project conducted an archaeological survey of the Purén and Lumaco Valley in Chile (approximately 30 km) from 1994-2004. During the survey, Dillehay and colleagues noted 300+ prehistoric and historic localities that ranged from agricultural features to multifunctional mounds. Those archaeological features represent an Araucanian polity dating to the Early Prehistoric (AD 500-1550) and early Hispanic (AD 1550-1700) periods. The chiefdom-level polity was strong politically and...
A rectory divided: mediation of space in a colonial town in the southern Peruvian highlands (2017)
During the 16th century Viceroy Toledo ordered a series of reforms in the Viceroyalty of Peru that involved the forced resettlement of the native population into planned nucleated settlements (reducciones). Toledo believed that these standardized built environments, in conjunction with ecclesiastical regulation, would produce idealized colonial communities. This paper presents the initial results of recent excavations in the rectory at Mawchu Llacta, a reducción in the Colca Valley. The rectory...
Recuperating Argentina Mestiza: An Ethnographic Study of Language, Music, and Race in Buenos Aires, Argentina (WGF - Dissertation Fieldwork Grant) (2018)
This resource is an application for the Dissertation Fieldwork Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation. This dissertation research investigates if and how Argentine actors are inverting Latina American racial ideologies of mestizaje to 'de-whiten' Argentine identity and produce a mestiza Argentine identity. Specifically, this project analyzes the linguistic and material practices by which Argentine actors construct and perform a mestiza Argentine identity in order to elucidate the potentially...
Recurrent Photogrammetry: Theory, Methodology and Application. (2018)
The integration of digital tools into the research, interpretation, and public outreach of historical shipwreck sites is rapidly becoming a requirement for any archaeology project. A workflow focused on utilizing photogrammetry point cloud data is presented here, developed from multiple underwater research field seasons, as well as work conducted in 2017 at the Highbourne Cay shipwreck site in the Exumas, Bahamas. The workflow uses photogrammetry for the creation of real-scale, three-dimensional...

REDIFINING THE CHACHAPOYA TERRITORY (2015)
The number of studies in the ancient Chachapoya territory increased tremendously in the last two decades. It is clear that the concept of a Chachapoya unit does not have a strong basis. This is not a new idea, ethnohistorial documents refer to the differentiated communities included in the common denomination introduced since the time of the Inka conquest. This presentation reviews the distribution of sites referred in the literature, introducing new data based on speleological studies,...
Reevaluating the end of the Early Intermediate Period on the Peruvian coast from the perspective of the Lima culture (2017)
Reflections on digital data acquisition and analysis at Chavín de Huántar, Peru (2015)
The monumental center of Chavín de Huántar in the Peruvian Central Andes has been the subject of mapping efforts for more than a century, and of digital mapping efforts since the mid-1990s. Spatial technology has been fundamental to significant revision of the site’s construction sequence, definition and extent, and ultimately interpretation. This results from the site’s complex, three-dimensional, and often-obscured architecture, mapping which has only become practical – and perhaps even...
