The promise and pitfalls of quantitative paleoenvironmental reconstruction in zooarchaeology: evaluation of late Quaternary micromammal assemblages from southern Africa (2017)
Over the last several decades, Quaternary scientists have developed numerous techniques to generate quantitative paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on the taxonomic composition of fossil assemblages. The appeal of these methods is that, rather than providing reconstructions in qualitative terms (e.g., cooler versus warmer), they offer potential to generate numerical assessments. While these methods have been applied to a variety of fossil organisms, including pollen, diatoms, foraminifera,...

Provenance and Distribution of Neo-Punic Ceramics at Zita, Southern Tunisia, and Beyond. (2017)
The site of Zita is an urban mound located in southern Tunisia and situated along an ancient trade route from Carthage to Tripoli. It is the highest point on a peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea across from the Island of Djerba, often identified as the Island of Calypso of the Lotus-Eaters from the Odyssey. Established as a Carthaginian settlement around 500 BCE, the city became a Roman regional center in the 1st century CE. Zita still has industrial features such as ceramic kilns and...
The Proximity of Communities to the Expanse of Big Data (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Archaeological Vision in the Age of Big Data" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. While members of the communities living near or on archaeological sites have frequently been hired around the world to dig on archaeological excavations, they have very rarely participated in the recording or documentation of those excavations. They have played even less of a role in designing the structures of either paper or electronic data...

Public Opinion and Archaeological Heritage: An Initial Perspective from Egypt (2017)
A recent survey of Egyptian public opinion on archaeological heritage issues focused on four main areas: level of public interest and participation in archaeology, the role of antiquities and monuments in contemporary society, perceived reasons behind the spread of the iliicit antiquities trade, awareness of problems and issues that endanger Egyptian antiquities and monuments. Data collected from a sample of 908 residents across nine governorates in Egypt are used to examine trends and patterns...
Putting Southern African Rock Paintings in Context: The View from the Mirabib Rockshelter, Namibia (2017)
Various researchers have made great strides toward understanding southern African rock art through the exploration of the ethnographic and ethnohistoric records of San hunter-gatherer shamanism. In contrast, less attention has been paid to the archaeological context of the Later Stone Age (LSA) in which rock art was produced. This paper examines Middle Holocene rock paintings at the Mirabib rockshelter in the Central Namib Desert, western Namibia. Our fieldwork at Mirabib and our re-analysis of...
Putting the Mold to the Test: The Application of Experimental Archaeology to Compare the Mold and Potter’s Wheel in Bronze Age Anatolia (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Moving across Syria-Mesopotamia to Anatolia and finally to the Aegean, potters during the Bronze Age gradually began to shift their ceramic repertoire from hand-made and coil-made ceramics to wheel-made pottery. Despite this rise in innovative manufacturing technology (the potter’s wheel), some sites in Western Anatolia, namely Seyitömer Höyük, exhibit...

Radiocarbon Dating of Land Snail Shell and the Chronology of MSA-Neolithic Human Activity in the Haua Fteah, Libya (2018)
Land snails have a radiocarbon ecology which leads to offsets in shell radiocarbon age, relative to contemporary biogenic carbon. We describe new methods for evaluating and calculating this offset. We radiocarbon date and apply the new methods to land snail food debris, from the deep MSA to Neolithic sequence in the Haua Fteah cave, NE Libya. Oxcal modelling of the resulting 136 dates over ~45000 years shows the site was used for short episodes separated by long periods of abandonment. The...
Railroads and the Historic Resources to Understand their Significance (2021)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Transitioning from Commemoration to Analysis on the Transcontinental Railroad in Utah: Papers in Honor and Memory of Judge Michael Wei Kwan" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Archaeological research of a railroad, while not dissimilar to researching the history of a place, has unique aspects that make it challenging if one is not familiar with the subject. When envisioning a railroad, most people think of...
(Re)Conquests: Creating New Societies at the Frontiers of the Medieval Western Mediterranean (2019)
This is an abstract from the "The State of the Art in Medieval European Archaeology: New Discoveries, Future Directions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This paper introduces the key questions of the "Landscapes of (Re)Conquest" research programme which is investigating the character of frontier societies in the medieval SW Mediterranean in the context of multiple conquests and regime changes. How did conquering authorities deal with the creation...

Recent Insights and Research on Paleolithic of Istria: Examples from Romuald’s Cave (2023)
This is an abstract from the "Recent Research on the Paleolithic in the Mediterranean Region" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The recent decade saw a rapid rise in the research on Paleolithic sites in Istria. This renewed interest started with field surveys and continued with new research projects aimed at better understanding of biocultural patterns and adaptations of hunter-gatherers in the region during the Pleistocene. The research included new...

Reconfiguring Social Networks: The Emergence of Social Complexity Before and After Urbanism on Cyprus (2018)
Despite the lack of cities, the Prehistoric Bronze Age on Cyprus (2400-1700 cal BC), an island in the Eastern Mediterranean, witnesses high wealth inequality and spatiotemporal variation in the emergence of social complexity or hierarchical social networks. Previous research has shown that social networks are malleable and cycle between egalitarian and hierarchical in different facets of complexity (control of labor, access to resources, participation in trade networks) through the Prehistoric...
