DOCUMENT Citation Only Flora Vilches. Lorena Sanhueza. Cristina Garrido. Cecilia Sanhueza. Ulises Cárdenas. Daniela Baudet.

In the second half of the 19th Century Chile began a period of profound change resulting from the expansion of the mining industry and increasing investment by large private capital interests. Only a few decades later, the subsistence mode of indigenous Atacameño society, in the far north, was profoundly transformed from an essentially agricultural-pastoral economy to a more diversified capitalist-based one. European occupation and its impact on local lifestyle: discussing architectural transformations in 20th-century sites in Argentinean Patagonia. (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Amalia Nuevo Delaunay.

European lifeways were introduced into  Argentinean Patagonia during the 19th century, thus joining this so-called "empty region" to the realm of the dominant global economic model. By the late 19th century, stockbreeding production started to spread over the area traditionally occupied by local indigenous people, thereby introducing significant changes to their lifestyle. Officially, indigenous peoples were to be settled into circumscribed reserves. However, some chose self-appointed...

DOCUMENT Full-Text Kathryn Puseman.

Charcoal samples from the base of two metallurgical furnaces at the Pulac 050 site in southern Bolivia were submitted for identification to determine if thola (Parastrephia) wood was burned in the furnace. Rock Salt Mining in San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile, during the 20th Century: Protoindustrialization or Industrialization in the Periphery? (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Flora Vilches.

Rock salt exploitation in the oases of San Pedro de Atacama is one among many expressions of capitalist expansion in Latin America. Except for mining concessions, historical documentation of these practices is virtually nonexistent, although material remains and former actors in the mining process still survive. In this paper, we present archaeological evidence of rock salt mining sites of different scale and kind of exploitation that coexist throughout the 20th century. Such differences show...
