Capitalist Expansion and Identity in the Oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, 1880-1980: An Interdisciplinary Approach (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Flora Vilches. Lorena Sanhueza. Cristina Garrido. Cecilia Sanhueza. Ulises Cárdenas. Daniela Baudet.

In the second half of the 19th Century Chile began a period of profound change resulting from the expansion of the mining industry and increasing investment by large private capital interests. Only a few decades later, the subsistence mode of indigenous Atacameño society, in the far north, was profoundly transformed from an essentially agricultural-pastoral economy to a more diversified capitalist-based one. In this poster we present the results of interdisciplinary research on four subsistence...

Drivers and Consequences of Past Human Migrations: Life-History Approach for the Southern Andes (WGF - Post PhD Research Grant) (2021)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Ramiro Barberena.

This resource is an application for the Post PhD Research Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Migrations are an intrinsic aspect of human societies, past and present. This global character can be used to build a comparative anthropological framework seeking to understand the drivers and consequences of migration. Within this agenda, we seek to comprehend what are the causes and social effects of a rapid migration pulse recorded between AD 1270-1420 in the southern Andes (Uspallata Valley,...

European occupation and its impact on local lifestyle: discussing architectural transformations in 20th-century sites in Argentinean Patagonia. (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Amalia Nuevo Delaunay.

European lifeways were introduced into  Argentinean Patagonia during the 19th century, thus joining this so-called "empty region" to the realm of the dominant global economic model. By the late 19th century, stockbreeding production started to spread over the area traditionally occupied by local indigenous people, thereby introducing significant changes to their lifestyle. Officially, indigenous peoples were to be settled into circumscribed reserves. However, some chose self-appointed...

DOCUMENT Citation Only Diego Carabias. Renato Simonetti. Carla Morales.

Infatigable was a Chilean Navy sailing transport vessel, lost in the harbour of Valparaiso (32° S) in 1855 as a consequence of an accidental explosion and subsequent fire. Positively identified in 2005, the wrecksite designated site S3 PV has been archaeologically investigated comprehensively during the last decade. The underwater survey and excavations conducted recorded the structural remains of the hull and produced a numerous and varied artefact assemblage to be analyzed. The material...

DOCUMENT Citation Only Beatriz Marín-Aguilera.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Colonial Forts in Comparative, Global, and Contemporary Perspective", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Chile was the most important and complex borderland of the Spanish Empire (1550–1818), in which colonial power and Indigenous resistance were contested over centuries. Spaniards struggled to subjugate the Reche-Mapuche –the local population–, and eventually conceded their independence upon the acknowledgement...

Rock Salt Mining in San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile, during the 20th Century: Protoindustrialization or Industrialization in the Periphery? (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Flora Vilches.

Rock salt exploitation in the oases of San Pedro de Atacama is one among many expressions of capitalist expansion in Latin America. Except for mining concessions, historical documentation of these practices is virtually nonexistent, although material remains and former actors in the mining process still survive. In this paper, we present archaeological evidence of rock salt mining sites of different scale and kind of exploitation that coexist throughout the 20th century. Such differences show...

Smoky places: archaeology of smoking practices on public parks of a capital city (Santiago, Chile, South America) (2016)

Cigarettes are the most numerous, ubiquitous, and tolerated form of trash on the urban landscape (Graesch & Hartshorn 2014:1). On this basis, it has became a critical public health issue.  Current approaches in the study of this phenomenon are based on interviews, but no material study has been conducted. Considering the differences between people´s...

Studies of the Subaltern in Contemporary Archaeology: Prostitution in Saltpeter Boomtowns and Ports of Northern Chile (1880-1930) (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Fernanda Kalazich.

Prostitution and prostitutes, despite their alleged ubiquity in time-space and exponential growth with industrialization, have rarely been the focus of historical inquiry, let alone of archaeology, with exceptional exceptions. With New Orleans’ red-light district Storyville as source of inspiration, this study seeks to archaeologically document prostitution in saltpeter boomtowns (salitreras) and ports of Northern Chile (1880-1930), aiming to identify and characterize the spaces of prostitution...
