Long-Term Coupled Socioecological Change in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico: Each generation transforms an inherited social and environmental world and leaves it as a legacy to succeeding generations. Long-term interactions among social and ecological processes give rise to complex dynamics on multiple temporal and spatial scales – cycles of change followed by relative stasis, followed by change. Within the cycles are understandable patterns and irreducible uncertainties; neither...

Large Game, Agricultural Land, and Settlement Pattern Change in the Eastern Mimbres Area, Southwest New Mexico (2011)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Karen Schollmeyer.

The 12th-century depopulation of large villages in the Mimbres region of the US Southwest has been attributed to a number of causes, including resource stress. This study combines archaeological evidence and models of environmental conditions in the eastern Mimbres area of southwest New Mexico to assess the magnitude and timing of food stress from a combination of a period of reduced precipitation and the effects of prolonged hunting and farming activities on the landscape. Results indicate that...

DOCUMENT Full-Text Steve Swanson. Karen Schollmeyer.

In summer 2005 the authors conducted a pilot study focused on gaining a better understanding of the intensity and duration of prehistoric occupation during the Pithouse Periods (A.D. 200-1000) in the eastern Mimbres area. Previous surveys identified a number of locations as pithouse sites or potential pithouse sites, but comparatively little data has been collected regarding site sizes or temporal periods represented at these locations. This information is critical for understanding ecological...
