This is an abstract from the "Working on the 19th-Century" session, at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The small port town of New Richmond, Ohio has a rich but neglected history ‒ it was once home to a pioneering family and their progressive academy. The Parker Academy, founded in 1839, was inspired by a vision that moved people beyond racial segregation and promoted unity during a time of extreme division. This school is perhaps one of the first integrated...
The Persistence of Resistance: Chinese Kongsi Partnerships in 18th Century Borneo and 19th Century North America (2020)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Arming the Resistance: Recent Scholarship in Chinese Diaspora Archaeology" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Chinese immigrant gold miners in North America are generally portrayed as unskilled laborers eking out a bare subsistence by scouring placer deposits previously worked and abandoned by white miners. Archaeological evidence and historic documentation suggest this is a gross oversimplification. For a...
Persistent Places in Landscapes of Dispersal: Archaeological and Ethnohistorical Investigations at Queen Esther’s Town Preserve, Athens, PA (2018)
We report on research at the Queen Esther’s Town Preserve, an Archaeological Conservancy property in Athens, Pennsylvania. Located at the confluence of the Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers, this land was home to a Delaware community led by Esther Montour during the American Revolution. The town was destroyed in September 1778 as part of the American campaign against British-allied Native villages and has since become a place anchor for the dominant narratives of Native disappearance common in the...
Personal Adornment in the Context of Antebellum Slavery at Poplar Forest (1830-1858) (2013)
Objects classified as personal adornment are often vested with meanings that reveal significant insight into their owners because they are personal. The context in which objects are used is critical to understanding potential meanings. This essay considers the recontextualization of personal adornment items, particularly glass beads, a pierced coin, and an alloy fastener, used by enslaved laborers at antebellum Poplar Forest plantation. The enslaved mobilized these forms of material culture in...
Personal Practice: Adornment and Personal Goods from the St. Amelia Plantation (16SJ80), St. James Parish, Louisiana (2023)
This is an abstract from the "Recent Research on Glass Beads and Ornaments in North America" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The material traces of those within certain spaces, such as the “Big Houses” of southern Louisiana’s plantations, are not restricted to the wealthy. Enslaved peoples, wage-laborers, and many others labored throughout the home. Here we utilize personal artifacts from Phase III data recovery excavations at the St. Amelia...

Perspectives from a Privy Past: Neighborhood and Race in Late Nineteenth-century Creole New Orleans (2018)
The Faubourg Tremé is often referred to as America’s oldest African-American neighborhood and has been the site of significant social, cultural, and political developments in New Orleans for the past two hundred years. From the colonial period onward, the neighborhood fostered the growth of the city’s Creole population and displayed a distinct cultural and demographic makeup unmatched in other parts of the American South. In recent decades, scholars have considered the Tremé as a rich site of...

Hispaniola is the epicenter of Colombian contact from the 1492 Santa Maria to the first sustained interaction between peoples of the Old and New Worlds at La Isabela. Since 1992, Indiana University has worked in the Dominican Republic to study and protect its significant historic and prehistoric Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH). Most notably, the Living Museums in the Sea initiative is a sustainable management strategy that provides an alternative to the commercial exploitation of submerged...

Petrographic Analyses of Prehistoric Ceramics from the Sexton Site (8IR01822), Indian River County, Florida (2021)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2021: General Sessions" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Sexton Site (8IR01822) is situated on a slightly elevated limestone hammock in Indian River County, Florida. Extensive geophysical prospection, shovel probing, and subsequent block excavations in 2019 revealed the presence of a midden with a possibly contiguous seasonal village or hamlet of probable Woodland age. Nine hundred ninety-two ceramic sherds were...
A petrographic and material science approach to understanding temper selection in the prehistoric ceramic sequence of the Scioto River Valley, Ross County, Ohio. (2017)
This research elucidates the complex nature of pottery tempers used in the Scioto River Valley of south central Ohio. The data suggest that during the Late Prehistoric Period indigenous potters began using composite temper types with concretionary hematite as a secondary temper — most often found alongside shell as the primary temper. This project involved two phases 1) petrographic research and 2) mechanical properties testing. The initial research phase involved a detailed analysis of the clay...
Pew Pew! Small Arms from the Storm Wreck, a Loyalist Evacuation Ship from the End of the American Revolutionary War. (2016)
On or just after 31 December 1782, sixteen ships from a larger fleet evacuating Charleston, South Carolina wrecked while attempting to enter the St. Augustine Inlet. One of these sixteen ships, the Storm Wreck, has been the focus of six seasons of excavation for the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), the research arm of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. The firearms recovered from the shipwreck include three Brown Bess muskets, two of which were loaded and in the...
The Pewter Assemblage from the Site of CSS Georgia (2020)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Current Research at the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. CSS Georgia had been in service for nearly 20 months when Sherman’s March to the Sea prompted Confederate forces to scuttle the ironclad to prevent the ship’s capture. Given the Confederate forces had time to remove supplies from the ship, salvage efforts shortly following the American Civil...

PGIS and Interwar Totalitarian Planning (2018)
Massive building programs undertaken in Europe between the world wars present a challenge for cultural resource management. While these projects' ambitious goals and often radical reconceptualization of space and social relations are historically noteworthy, their association with totalitarian regimes and repressive politics require careful contextualization. Through the example of agricultural reform in Fascist Italy, this paper advocates for an approach to this challenge through an...
