Archeological Survey and Architectural Study of Montezuma Castle National Monument (1988)
Inventory survey of Montezuma Castle National Monument was conducted from April 11 to May 7, 1988. Of the 70 sites recorded, 30 were new additions to the site inventory. Cliff dwellings, rockshelters and pueblos were recorded along with one and two-room masonry structures, roasting pits and artifact scatters. Agricultural feature sites include the canals at Montezuma Well. A site with prehistoric cobble concentrations, a burial ground, a bedrock mortar site, a lithic scatter, a historical site...
Cultural Resources Survey of the McMillian Property Fire Line in Verde Valley, Yavapai County, Arizona (2022)
SRP Water Rights and Contracts requested that Biological and Cultural Resources (BCRS) inspect a portion of the McMillan Property, in Camp Verde, Yavapai County, to determine if any cultural resources are present and would be impacted by proposed vegetation management aimed at reducing wildfire risks. BCRS staff Daniel Garcia and Nina Grimaldi conducted the inspection on January 13, 2022. As a result of the survey, one archaeological site (McMillan-1, believed to be NA3528 or the Verde Ballcourt...
Dead Horse Ranch State Park: An Archeological Overview (1988)
On February 27, 1974, the Arizona State Parks Board adopted a Master Plan for Dead Horse State Ranch. The park covers some 320 acres. Though the proposed development plan has been altered on several occasions, it has included the construction of three man-made lakes for public fishing, the preservation of natural wildlife habitats and archaeological sites with appropriate interpretive programs, as well as the creation of hiking trails to afford recreational opportunities. Camping areas with...
The History and Archaeology of Nine Historic Sites on the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation: An Overview (1985)
The Fort McDowell Indian Reservation is rich in historic and prehistoric archaeological resources. Systematic surface searches have located and recorded over 100 archaeological sites within the 40 square mile reservation. Such sites show that many groups have used the area, including the prehistoric Hohokam, the Yavapai, Anglo-Americans, and Mexican-Americans. Prior to 1984, however, only four sites at Fort McDowell had been excavated or tested. Two of the sites were prehistoric, consisting of...
The Hohokam, Sinagua and the Hakataya (1960)
The Museum of Northern Arizona has spent a number of years sponsoring archaeological investigations which have led to defining the Sinagua culture in the neighborhood of the San Francisco Mountain area of northern Arizona. The Gila Pueblo Archaeological Foundation has devoted considerable research to the definition of the Hohokam in southern Arizona. Dr. Colton, in his various publications on the Sinagua, also demonstrated that the Hohokam up to about 1125 A.D. and the Sinagua from 1125 to...
An Overview and Assessment of Middle Verde Valley Archeology (2008)
It has been 30 years since Paul and Suzanne Fish (1977) prepared the first archeological overview and assessment of the Verde Valley. During that time, as the saying goes, “everything has changed, and nothing has changed.” One very significant change is that, as a result of federal legislation requiring archeological survey and evaluation of archeological resources prior to federally financed or sanctioned land modification activities, hundreds of compliance driven archeological surveys and a...
POLLEN ANALYSIS AT THREE SITES IN THE VERDE VALLEY, ARIZONA (1989)
Pollen samples were analyzed from three sites (AZ N:4:23, PD-11, and PD-12) near Tuzigoot National Monument in the Verde Valley. Occupations include Hohokam, Sinagua, and historic Yavapai. Pollen samples collected at these sites represent living surfaces, a roasting pit, and two rock piles. Pollen analysis identified cultigens grown and addresses the subsistence base.
Research Issues in the Prehistory of Central Arizona: The Central Arizona Water Control Study, Volume 1 (1984)
The Central Arizona Water Control Study provided the occasion to reassess the current state of our knowledge of the prehistory of the greater Salt-Gila Basin. There are two reasons for conducting this review. The first is to provide a baseline review of the current research questions, problems, and unknowns in our understanding of the prehistory of the area. The second purpose is to stimulate, through the examination of old ideas, the development of new views on the prehistory of this area. In...
Studies in the Prehistory of Central Arizona; The Central Arizona Water Control Study, Volume 2 (1986)
Draft Copy Even for those involved, it is not easy to grasp or remember all that happened as part of the Central Arizona Water Study. This is partly because of the sheer size of the undertaking (at one point 19 different alternatives, with about three variations each, were being analyzed), partly because of the shifting objectives of the project, and partly because archaeology was only a small part of a very large multi-disciplinary study that lasted over 3 years. But, perhaps, closest to the...
Tuzigoot Burials (1992)
Tuzigoot Pueblo is the type site for the Tuzigoot Phase of the Southern Sinagua Tradition and was occupied from c. A.D. 1140 to c. 1400. This report gives the results of re-analysis of data from burials excavated at Tuzigoot in 1933-1934. The purpose of the study is to abstract the organizing principles of social status, a subject of current archeological interest. This project was conducted within constraints that would be imposed by repatriation of mortuary remains. Nearly all of the 411...
The Tuzigoot Survey and Three Small Verde Valley Projects: Archaeological Investigations in the Middle Verde Valley, Arizona (1986)
This report presents the results of the TUZI 86A archeological project, whose main objective was the inventory of cultural resources within Tuzigoot National Monument and a proposed land acquisition area adjacent to the monument. It states the results of the survey, presents a summary of previous work in the project area, and discusses the cultural history and natural setting of the region. This is followed by site descriptions, artifact analyses and results, interpretations of the subsistence...
Tuzigoot: An Archaeological Overview (1976)
This report is the result of a proposed subterrene drainage project at Tuzigoot National Monument. In June, 1975, the Museum of Northern Arizona contracted with the National Park Service (Contract No. CX81005004) to study the impact of the drainage project on the archaeological resources at the Monument. In conjunction with this phase of the project, Museum archaeologists were to locate all possible undisturbed deposits in the pueblo. These deposits would be plotted on an archaeological base map...
