Archeological investigations at Round Spring have produced evidence for human occupation beginning with the Dalton culture. Intermittent prehistoric use of the area surrounding Round Spring continued until about A.D. 1300 when the area was abandoned. This is an Arizona Site Steward file for the Running Deer Village site, located on Bureau of Land Management land. The site is comprised of a masonry pueblo, platforms, bedrock metates, petroglyphs, and artifact scatter. The Salt Pond Project was undertaken in 1968 with support from the University of Maine and the National Science Foundation. The work was focused on the Grindle site, but test excavations were also carried out on the nearby Allen site as well as on the Carleton Island site. These are sites 42-10, 42-11, and 42-27 in the numbering system in use at the time at the University of Maine. Excavation recovered materials assignable to the Woodland period.
