Abolition Geography and the Archaeology of Urban American Slavery (2021)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Christopher N. Matthews.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Archaeology of Urban Dissonance: Violence, Friction, and Change" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Recent calls for a revival of abolition (of the police, of racism, of capitalism, of America) intentionally connect contemporary movements to the legacy of abolitionism we often associate with the fight to end slavery and institute a new society defined by not only freedom but also an unbounded existence....

African American Burials and Memorials in Colonial Williamsburg (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Ywone Edwards-Ingram.

This paper discusses archaeological findings within Colonial Williamsburg and explores factors that have influenced ways of knowing about eighteenth-century burial sites of African-descendant individuals and groups in Williamsburg, Virginia.  While the emphasis is on the colonial era, some attention is given to the nineteenth century and the more visible commemorations of the dead relating to this period.   The aim is to discuss burials and commemorative practices of enslaved and free blacks and...

In June of 2020, my wife and I purchased a contributing home in the Governor’s Mansion Historic District in Downtown Little Rock, Arkansas. An Archaeology Of Jazz: Urban And Racial Identity At The Blue Bird Inn, Detroit (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only C. Lorin Brace VI.

The postwar period was a transformative time for African American communities in Detroit. Mass migrations of African Americans from the south and shifts in the racial boundaries between neighborhoods led to dramatic changes in the urban makeup of the city. Located at the center of one such neighborhood in Detroit’s Westside was the Blue Bird Inn, one of the most important jazz clubs in the city as well as a social hub for the community. The Blue Bird rose to prominence in the late 1940s with the...

The Archaeology of Maritime Alexandria (2020)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Eleanor Breen.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Urban Archaeology: Down by the Water" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. In 2012, City Council approved a plan to revitalize Alexandria’s historic waterfront. Just as Alexandrians sought to transform their sleepy tobacco town into a prosperous port, so too do today’s residents envision a vibrant waterside destination. Because of the 30-year old Archaeology Protection Code requiring, archaeologists geared up...

Beyond the Palace Walls: Household Perspectives on Living and Working in Late 3rd millennium BC Tell Asmar, Iraq (ancient Eshnunna) (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Lise Truex.

Past studies contextualizing residential neighborhoods within the socioeconomic, political, and geographic organization of early historic urban settlements in ancient southern Mesopotamia have concentrated heavily on architecture and ancient textual evidence to document diachronic changes in household fortunes. As part of a PhD dissertation project, this investigation of households from the late 3rd millennium BC levels of the Private Houses residential area at urban Tell Asmar (ancient...

"Boring" Archaeology Along the Buried Historic Seattle Waterfront: Challenges from the Alaska Way Viaduct Replacement Project in Washington State (2020)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Scott S Williams. Cassandra Manetas.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Urban Archaeology: Down by the Water" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The Seattle waterfront, a formerly industrial landscape that has undergone significant redevelopment over 150 years, has deeply buried former surfaces and historic sites. WSDOT removed a seismically vulnerable viaduct structure and replaced it with a bored tunnel under the historic waterfront and adjacent urban center. Project constraints...

Building Colonialism: Nineteenth-Century Colonial Tanzania and its Urban Representation (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Daniel Rhodes.

Tanzania’s coastal harbour towns underwent phenomenally rapid transformation from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s. This was the result of British and German colonialism and the development of a new capitalist system of economic and social control. This new western design served to re-define the earlier systems of capitalist exchange within the formally Omani dominated Swahili Coast.  The various systems of appropriation and reorganisation are represented in the urban landscape and resulted in...

Cerro de Oro and the Year A.D. 600: Changing Settlement Patterns in the Lower Cañete Valley (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Francesca Fernandini.

The year AD. 600 seems to be an important turning point in the settlement pattern of the lower Cañete valley. While settlements prior to this date tend to be small sized and located close to the river margin, the period after AD 600 shows settlements tend to be placed a few kilometers away from the river margin. The largest of these is Cerro de Oro, a 150ha densely populated settlement located on top of a mound, 13km away from the river margin. The construction and use of Cerro de Oro seems to...

Clandestine, Ephemeral, Anonymous? Myths and Actualities of the Intimate Economy of a 19th-Century Boston Brothel (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jade W Luiz.

Although prostitution was illegal in 19th-century Boston, it was not carried out in secret, nor did it produce so ephemeral a trace as to render it invisible in the historical and archaeological record. Study of material remains from the 27/29 Endicott Street brothel demonstrates the multi-layered realities of brothel life as the residents of the brothel developed strategies for coping with being purchased for ostensibly intimate acts that were in fact commercial transactions. These strategies...

Coleraine, Co. Londonderry: Past and Present  (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Nick F Brannon.

As with many Irish towns, Coleraine commemorates the 400th anniversary of its borough status in 2013. Born of Patrician myth origins, there was evident medieval settlement, its inland port (despite access issues) being central to its success. Re-invented in the early 1600s, under James I’s ‘Plantation’ of Ulster, the Renaissance street pattern survives. Urban myths, perpetuated by the Irish Society, as to Coleraine’s imported English flat-pack timber housing frames are exploded; this is...
