Coastal Settlement Patterns in BC at the Pleistocene-Holocene Transition (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Alexander Mackie. Nicole Smith. Colton Vogelaar. Quentin Mackie. Joanne McSporran.

In this presentation we explore how early Holocene shoreline settlement patterns in Haida Gwaii can be used to inform the search for late Pleistocene sites on Quadra Island in the northern Salish Sea. The 11K to 14.5K cal BP shorelines on Quadra Island are located at elevations up to 180 m above modern. Low visibility necessitates focused investigations on these raised landforms in order to find early sites. We are applying our knowledge of the distribution of archaeological sites in Gwaii...

Intensification of Aquatic Resource Exploitation at the Terminal Pleistocene/Early Holocene Boundary? (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Clive Bonsall. Catriona Pickard. Peter Groom.

Intensive and specialized exploitation of marine resources has traditionally been attributed to the Early Holocene in Europe, from c. 11,500 cal BP (e.g. Clark 1965, 1975; von Brandt 1984) as a response to changing climate, reduction in large mammal biomass, and consequent broadening of the resource base. However, the technical sophistication of fishing gear recovered from Early Holocene archaeological contexts is suggestive of a long history of development. This paper presents a synthesis of...

LONG TERM ALLUVIAL RESPONSES TO CLIMATE CHANGE: IDENTIFYING PAST LANDSCAPES AND SITE DISTRIBUTION ALONG MIDWEST WATERSHEDS (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Kayla Schmalle.

The Pleistocene-Holocene climate change had a global effect on the patterns and variations of river channels. Following the Last Glacial Maximum there was site specific variability regarding fluvial reactions, including vegetation, fluvial discharge, dominant sediment transport systems, and climate. This project will investigate and compare the various inputs and routing of sediment in two Midwest watersheds in response to the changing climate of the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and the...

The Pleistocene-Holocene Transition in Cantabrian Spain: Current State of the Question (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Lawrence Straus.

Decades of research involving new excavations, chronometric dating, artifact and faunal analyses, site distribution studies and isotopic analyses have refined our understanding of the transitions from Upper Magdalenian to Azilian and then to a variety of Mesolithic cultural traditions in the period between the Allerod and Boreal climatic phases in the classic region of Cantabrian Spain. There are indicators of both continuity in some aspects of settlement, subsistence and technology at some...

Theoretically Based Investigations of the Paleo-Indian Occupation of Grass Valley, Nevada (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erik Martin. Robert G. Elston. D. Craig Young. Brian Codding. David E. Rhode.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The nature of human use of the central Great Basin during the Pleistocene-Holocene Transition (PHT) remains unclear. Ongoing archaeological research in Grass Valley, Nevada, focuses on understanding foraging behavior in changing PHT landscapes through expectations of Human Behavioral Ecology and geoarchaeological investigations for defining the extent of...

Tracing Paleoamerican adaptations to South American Tropics: new data from lithics analyses in Brazil (2024)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Marina González-Varas. Antonio Pérez-Balarezo.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Recent archaeological findings in the neotropical region of South America are central to understanding the early adaptations of Paleoamerican populations to diverse ecosystems, especially tropical areas, between 14,000 and 9,000 BP — a period marked by significant paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic shifts. This study focuses on the critical role of...
