Curbed Boundaries: An Analysis of Home Front Material Culture within the Context of Individual vs. Municipal Investments in Contemporary Oakland, CA (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erin P. Riggs. Andrew H. Reagan. Matt L. Riggs.

This project investigates the material evidence of individual and City investment in the built landscapes of Oakland, California. Through virtual pedestrian survey, we have analyzed 1000 randomly selected home fronts, implementing a five-facet rating scale to document evidence of resident investment in diverse socio-economic areas. Results suggest that while residents throughout all areas of Oakland invest materially in their homes, they do so differently.  Those in higher income areas invest in...

Excavating Experience: Exploring Delhi’s mid-century housing through literature and streetscape survey (2021)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Sumedha Chakravarthy.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Historical Archaeology in South Asia" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. People engage with material landscapes in embodied, emotive ways. Experience is shaped not only by physical realities, but also by social positionality and individual perspective. Archaeologists often use oral history, ethnoarchaeology, or phenomenology as a means of considering human engagement with material landscapes. Literature also...

La Quemada-Malpaso Valley Archaeological Project (LQ-MVAP)
PROJECT Ben Nelson. Arizona State Universtity. Andrea Torvinen.

For over 15 years, Mexican and American archaeologists and students have dug ancient ruins, walked the high desert landscape, and worked in laboratories to understand the rise and fall of La Quemada, Zacatecas. We want to know why societies become complex, developing social hierarchies with specialized economic, political, and religious roles for their members. Why do civilizations expand? Northern Mexico's ancient past is an ideal context for studying these questions. During the period A.D....

Materializing Nationhood: the Many Roles of Built Landscape Management Policy in Post-Partition India and Pakistan (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erin Riggs.

This paper discusses built landscape management policies put in place during the aftermath of the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. It is argued that the management of out-migrant associated buildings (both monumental and residential) was influenced by three divergent goals of nationhood: (1) modernization, (2) secularism, and (3) cultural cohesion. These goals pointed towards conflicting actions. Providing shelter to millions of incoming refugees required the hasty allocation of dwelling...

Partition Refugee Housing As Emergent Heritage (2021)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erin P Riggs.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Historical Archaeology in South Asia" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Readings of material heritage are always entangled with understandings of who rightfully belongs. In India, colonial archaeology was used to legitimize subjugation in the past while nationalist archaeology today is used to justify the marginalization of minorities. The narratives surrounding modern day material patterns, while rarely the...

Usable Aid: Refugee Resettlement in Post-Partition Delhi (2020)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erin P Riggs.

This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Previous archaeologies of socialism and the welfare state demonstrate how spaces designed by centralized authorities are often incongruent with the needs of individuals. This paper considers 1947 Partition refugee resettlement in Delhi as a contrasting example, one that exemplifies the potential effectiveness of government investment in public housing. Delhi’s colonies are unique...
