On the High Plains of North America, geographical separation and cultural isolation were not the same phenomena. Upper Republican and Apishapa archaeological units, for example, represented separate ethno-linguistic groups, but they were not isolated. Apishapa pottery at the Wallace site (Upper Republican) and Upper Republican pottery at Cramer (Apishapa) demonstrate reciprocal interaction.
