Isotope ecological signatures can add to the overall understanding of terrestrial and aquatic species’ diets that are present at an archaeological site. In this paper we analyze fauna specimens from across the breadth of species found at the Slocan Narrows site, an aboriginal pithouse village occupied from 3,100 cal BP to the late 18th century in the Upper Columbia River area of the interior Pacific Northwest. We utilize EA-IRMS to measure δN, δC, and δO isotope ratios to obtain an...

Hohokam Farming Settlements in North Scottsdale: Archaeological Excavations at AZ U:1:183 (ASM) and AZ U:1:186 (ASM) (2001)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: system user

This report discusses excavation results at two Hohokam farmsteads (AZ U:1:183 [ASM] and AZ U:1:186 [ASM]) in north Scottsdale, Arizona. Data recovery investigations identified one pithouse and several extramural features at both sites. In addition, a pole-and-brush-lined surface structure was identified at AZ U:1:186 (ASM) that suggests the pithouse may have functioned as a cold-season dwelling while the surface structure served as a warm-season dwelling. Architecture and material culture...

An updated GIS-based system for calculating MNE and quantifying bone surface modification frequencies and spatial location on skeletal elements in faunal assemblages (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Erich Fisher. Jamie Hodgkins. Curtis Marean.

Zooarchaeology continues to suffer methodological problems in that analysts use methods for calculating skeletal element and surface modification abundance that vary widely, are non-transparent, and almost certainly produce data that is not comparable across analysts. In 2001, Marean, Abe, Nilssen, and Stone presented a method to overcome these problems by using a GIS-based approach to calculate minimum numbers of skeletal elements (MNE) and surface modification frequencies corrected for...
