Obsidian Procurement, Reduction Technology, and Utilization at Altica (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Dan Healan.

Technological classification of nearly 30,000 pieces of obsidian recovered from survey and excavation followed by attribute analysis of stratified random samples of some 3,400 specimens reveal several distinct modes of raw material acquisition, reduction technology, and utilization at Altica. The various modes are described from a technological perspective and their various logistical, social, economic, and political implications are considered.

The Organization and Economic Activity Related to the Extraction and Production of Utilitarian Tools in the Mopan Valley, Belize (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Rachel Horowitz.

A major topic of recent study about the ancient Maya is the role of elites and non-elites in the ancient Maya economy. Such studies have illustrated that different types of objects operated within varying economic modes; therefore the methods of production and distribution of diverse types of objects should be examined individually. This paper will examine the economic role of utilitarian chert tools in the Late to Terminal Classic Maya economy. This paper will utilize an examination of the...

The origins of stone tool reduction and the transition to knapping: An experimental approach (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Shelby Putt.

There is now a general consensus that the earliest Oldowan artifacts were made by skilled toolmakers with a clear understanding of the fracturing mechanics of different toolstone materials, thus leading several researchers to propose a simpler lithic reduction stage that occurred prior to 2.6 Ma. Three reduction techniques that are within the behavioral repertoire of the genus Pan are proposed as potential intermediate stages between the percussion behaviors of the LCA of chimpanzees and humans...

Passage through a Palimpsest: Lower Magdalenian Lithic Manufacture and Maintenance Patterns in El Mirón Cave, Cantabria, Spain (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Lisa Fontes.

El Mirón cave, a major Upper Paleolithic residential site in Cantabria, Spain, has been the subject of long-term excavations led in part by Lawrence Straus. This presentation focuses on Level 17, a significant Lower Magdalenian deposit excavated in the cave’s outer vestibule. Level 17, which is a total of 33cm thick, was divided into 13 sublevels that were created using correlations made between depth measurements taken during the excavation in each square meter of the 9.5 square meter area....

Pre Clovis at Topper (38AL23): Evaluating the Role of Human versus Natural Agency in the Formation of Lithic Deposits from a Pleistocene Terrace in the American Southeast (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Douglas Sain.

This paper examines the lithic materials from the presumed pre-Clovis deposits at the Topper Site (38AL23), a Paleoindian quarry and stone tool manufacture site in Allendale County, South Carolina. Prior research at Topper identified flakes and possible chipped stone tools from Pleistocene-aged sediments that predate Clovis, traditionally considered the earliest culture complex in the region. The goal of this study is to document the nature of the pre-Clovis assemblage at Topper, and to explore...

Prehistoric Foragers in the Central Alaska Range (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only John Blong.

Upland landscapes in the central Alaska Range play an important role in understanding prehistoric hunter-gatherer settlement organization, subsistence activities, and lithic assemblage variability in interior Alaska. Previous research hypothesizes that late Pleistocene and early Holocene seasonal upland hunting conditioned lithic assemblages in the interior, and that seasonally available upland resources grew in importance through the middle and late Holocene, as interior foragers shifted to a...
