Teaching with Beer: An Archaeology of Beer in and outside of the Classroom (2021)
This is an abstract from the "Raise Your Glass to the Past: An Exploration of the Archaeology of Beer" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Why study an archaeology of beer? Beyond the modern popularity of craft beer, this beverage is a deeply ancient and meaningful form of material culture. It is also a powerful tool to put faces onto the past, and to make the ancient peoples we study both relevant and enticing to our students and the larger public....

Teotihuacan Sound Mapping: Exploring the Sonic Sphere of the City of the Gods (2021)
This is an abstract from the "Music Archaeology's Paradox: Contextual Dependency and Contextual Expressivity" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Teotihuacan Sound Mapping Project explores the role that sound and music played in the ancient urban environment of the site. The sound tools and musical instruments of Teotihuacan are re-created and played in different architectural settings, and the instrumental and architectural acoustics subsequently...

Testing 17th-century naval ordnance: the Vasa Cannon Project (2018)
When the Swedish warship Vasa sailed on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1628, it was probably the most heavily-armed warship in the world, with a total broadside of over 300 kg. In 2013, the Vasa Museum constructed a replica of one of the guns, a 24-pounder demi-cannon. This was test fired 54 times in order to assess range, accuracy, effect and ergonomic aspects of this type of early modern ordnance as part of a larger project to investigate the tactical capability of 17th-centry warships....
Testing Adaptive Efficiency: A Comparison of the Durability of Stone and Copper Projectile Points (2018)
The Old Copper Complex represents a unique temporally and geographically bounded technological phenomenon. Binford (1962) challenged the idea that copper tools were adopted by Native Americans solely because they were technologically more efficient. He argued that Archaic copper served a primarily socio-technic function based on two assumptions. One, that copper tools were more efficient in use performance than their stone and bone counterparts. And two, that the energy expenditure required for...
Testing the greasy lustre: a Mass Gloss Analysis of coarse grained silcrete from the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, south-eastern Australia (2015)
The heat treatment of silcrete for lithic production has been identified as far back as 72,000 years ago, using a variety of scientific techniques. However, in most contexts simple visual assessment, notably the appearance of a lustrous red surface, is used to identify the use of heat treatment. Mass Gloss Analysis (MGA) is a quantitative, non-destructive method designed for measuring the increase in lustre noted on heat-treated lithics. Initially developed to investigate microcrystalline...

Textiles, Tools, and Trepidation: Experiments in Creating Bone and Antler Tools Used in the Production of Textiles (2023)
This is an abstract from the "Defining Perishables: The How, What, and Why of Perishables and Their Importance in Understanding the Past" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Tools used in the creation of textiles can be made of numerous materials, including stone, clay, metal, wood, bone, and anther, just to name a few. Numerous experiments in creating tools, such as spindle whorls, loom weights, needles, combs, and weaving battens have been carried...
Thermal Processes on Tropical Archaeological Shell: An Experimental Study (2018)
Tropical archaeological shell middens throughout Australasia provide valuable information about subsistence practices, environmental changes, and human occupation. One of the major anthropic processes that can occur in any midden site is burning or heating of the shell, either from cooking or heat-treating shell for working. Thermal influences on marine shell are poorly understood across all disciplines, including archaeology. Burning or heating may not always show any visual signs and rather...
THESE ARE THE FLINTKNAPPERS: A CASE STUDY CONCERNING THE ABILITY TO MEASURE FLINTKNAPPING SKILL VARIATION IN THE ANALYSIS OF DEBITAGE (2016)
One application of experimental archaeology is attempting to understand variations in flintknapping skill. These experiments often have flintknappers of varying skill levels attempt to replicate different variants of prehistoric stone tools. Previous studies of skill level in the debitage produced during flintknapping is restricted to qualitative means of analysis. To add to the expanding collection of experimental archaeology that attempts to identify flintknapping skill, this paper addresses...
The Third Harvest of the First Millennium AD (1999)
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the agricultural practices of the peasant class during the first millennium, particularly the Medieval period. The paper also discusses the social aspects of this "lower" class and how their "physical toil of food production" directly effected the landscape, dietary norms, and the economy.

‘To be or not to be…’ A Taphonomic Perspective on Pseudoartifacts (2018)
An anthropocentric perspective governs most of archaeological research into lithic assemblages. Hence, spatial and morphological trends in the lithic record are interpreted primarily in terms of human technological behavior without a systematic assessment of unintentional and/or non-human factors as sources of variation. Surprisingly, controversies on the natural vs. anthropic character of several lithic assemblages or ‘industries’ did not prompt the adoption of taphonomic approaches by lithic...

TOOL PRODUCTION, SUBSISTENCE, OR PRACTICE: AN INVESTIGATION OF HUMAN MODIFIED BISON PHALANGES PRESENT AT THE BULL CREEK AND CLARY RANCH SITES (2015)
The Clary Ranch site in Southwestern Nebraska and the Bull Creek site in Northwestern Oklahoma are Late-Paleoindian camps that were used for processing the meat and bones from bison hunts. This is an experimental archaeological investigation involving Clary Ranch and Bull Creek, both of which contain evidence of spiral fracturing on bison phalanges resulting from the butchering and preparation process. This archaeological experiment investigates possible motives Paleoindian hunters would have...

Touching the Past in Museums: issues of authenticity and identity for crafted replicas and 3D print facsimiles of rare, perishable and iconic artefacts (2015)
Traditional museum presentations of rare or fragile archaeological artefacts are dominated by displays behind glass; vision dominates the sensory experience. The emotional connections built by more multisensory engagement with artefacts offer a better appreciation of the ancient objects and an enhanced museum visit. The research focused on icons of identity which were too precious to allow handling and items which were too fragile to touch, such as ancient perishable textiles and basketry. The...

Towards an Interpretive Framework for Burnt Ostrich Eggshell: An Experimental Study (2017)
Ostrich eggs have been a valuable resource for Sub-Saharan populations for thousands of years, offering a rich nutritional source as well as a means of transporting water. While burned ostrich eggshell (OES) fragments are common at sites, it is difficult to determine whether they were subsistence refuse or the disposed remnants of canteens. Current tools for analyzing OES burning conditions involve expensive and time consuming isotopic analysis or scanning electron microscopy. This research aims...
