A Lithic Analysis of Food Preparation and Resource Distribution in Recuay Ritual Feasting Contexts at Hualcayán (Ancash, Peru) (2015)
The preparation and consumption of food during feasting rituals is an ancient tradition in the Andes, occurring both on a small scale (participation of one family or kin group) and on a large scale (community-wide involvement). This poster presents a recent analysis of lithic tools from Hualcayán, an ancient Recuay community (1-600 AD) in highland Ancash, Peru. Excavations at Hualcayán yielded a variety of ground stone and expedient chipped stone tools and debris from a range of different...
A Lithic Analysis of Paraje San Diego, New Mexico, United States (2017)
For nearly three hundred years of official use, with long periods of unofficial use both pre- and post-dating the road, the Camino Real del Tierra Adentro served as one of the major conduits of transportation in New Mexico. Along the route, campsites, known as parajes, were established to provide adequate stopping points and access to resources for the variety of travelers which used the road. Paraje San Diego, one of the most established of these stopping points in the Jornada del Muerto, was...

Lithic Communities of Practice at the Missions of La Florida (2018)
Lithic data have received sparse attention in research on the Franciscan missions of Spanish La Florida. A re-analysis of the collections from three seventeenth-century interior missions reveals that Native Americans continued to rely on a diverse lithic technological tradition well after arrival of friars in their communities and the subsequent importation of metal tools. This pattern is also reflected in historical accounts where, for example, Native Americans were mandated to maintain quotas...

Lithics and the Late Prehistoric: Changing Adaptive Strategies on the Southeastern Columbia Plateau (2017)
How do people adapt to the changing natural and social environment of the late prehistoric (3,000 B.P. to historic), Columbia Plateau? By interacting and learning from one another, and by adapting their technology. Though frequently characterized as a homogenous culture area over the past 3,000 years, previous analyses show differences in artifact form, assemblage composition and household features. This project traces these changes through the stone tools of the archaeological record. Research...
Lithics Animated (2022)
This is a poster submission presented at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Archaeologists are moving away from just classifying objects in dryly scientific ways that obscure meanings and the past people who used them. We are attempting to view items through the lenses of their users. As we study Native American material culture, this means understanding the agency that inheres in artifacts. Great Lakes Anishinaabeg understood that objects both constrain and...
Lithics as evidence of social networks and landscape knowledge among the Western Wendat, 1670-1701 (2016)
The Western Wendat were refugees that fled their homeland villages in Ontario in 1649, and resettled in the western Great Lakes. This paper examines the lithic resources from their village at the Straits of Mackinac, inhabited from 1670-1701. Lithics can be indicative of multiple aspects of the resettlement process – particularly knowledge of local resources and strength of social networks. Results show that formal tools, excluding gunflints, tend to be made from cherts from the lower peninsula...
The Lithics of Conchal, Nicaragua and the story they tell (2015)
During the excavations of Conchal, Department of Rivas, Nicaragua relatively few lithic materials were encountered. While there were only 315 lithic pieces found, much can be learned from these pieces; this includes the daily activities that the prehistoric population conducted. By examining the data from the excavations, it was determined that the population began as a semi-nomadic one that eventually permanently inhabited the area. The formal and informal tools, along with the site furniture...
Lithics, Landscapes & la Longue-Durée – Curation as an Expression of Forager Mobility (2016)
With the recognition that practically all archaeological sites are depositional composites unrelated to the activities of any contemporary group of individuals (i.e., palimpsests) and that forager adaptations are not ‘site-specific’ but rather landscape-scaled phenomena, statistical approaches designed to take these predicates into account have been developed over the past decade that depart from the traditional techno-typological systematics used for decades in much of Europe and the Levant....

Making Sense of the Variation in Folsom Projectile Point Technology (2015)
Analyses of Folsom projectile point technology generally focus on the making and use of the classic bifacially fluted form. Often some mention is made of Midland or unfluted points, but formal technological analyses of these types are rare. Utilizing a sample of 989 points and preforms from Folsom and closely related technologies, this research explores the variation that is present in Folsom point production. Points from Folsom contexts are divided into five types: Folsom, Midland,...
