The Arctic Valley Ski Area includes the original location chosen by the Anchorage Ski Club and the US Army in the early 1940s and the adjacent location the Anchorage Ski Club moved to in 1952 to the north. Forts Amador and Grant were constructed to guard the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, which reverted to the Republic of Panama at the end of 1999, concluding a unique period in both countries' histories. The forts remain as a physical legacy of the U.S. contribution to the cultural heritage of Panama.
