Ornaments, Pigments, and Household Production: Spatial Patterning and Residue Analysis of Ground Stone Artifacts from Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico (A.D. 800-1200) (2015)
Previous investigations of craft industries at Chacoan great houses have focused largely on finished objects (e.g., ceramics, turquoise, and shell). This study explores an often overlooked but ubiquitous and highly diverse class of artifacts – ground stone abraders – in an effort to better understand the organization of production at Pueblo Bonito great house. Analysis of variation in form of these versatile implements provides insight into the range of craft items manufactured. Drawing on the...

POLLEN ANALYSIS AT 5GN817, CHANCE GULCH, COLORADO WITH SUPPORTING ARCHAEOCLIMATE MODELS FROM GUNNISON, COLORADO (2004)
The Chance Gulch site, 5GN817, is an 8000 year old camp located about 2.5 miles southeast of the town of Gunnison, Colorado. The site is situated within the sagebrush community, though pine and aspen trees are within view. Nine stratigraphic samples were analyzed to determine paleovegetation and paleoenvironment in the site area and potential plant resources that might have been available to the paleoindian occupants of the camp. Three pollen washes of groundstone artifacts were analyzed to...
POLLEN ANALYSIS AT THE HOUGHTON ROAD SITE, (AZ BB:13:398), ARIZONA (1990)
The Houghton Road Site is located within the city limits of Tucson, Arizona immediately west of Houghton Road between Tanque Verde Road and Speedway Boulevard. It is situated on the flood plain at the convergence of the Tanque Verde and Agua Caliente washes. This Hohokam site has been archaeomagnetically dated to AD 400 to 600. Although it is a typical Hohokam site, some Mogollonlike architectural components are noted. This site includes large deep square houses, cremations and...
POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR THE BIG CHICO CREEK ECOLOGICAL RESERVE, CALIFORNIA (2006)
Four sediment samples and a single ground stone from the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve were submitted for pollen and starch analysis. This area is part of the Chico State BCCER project. The sediment samples represent individual levels and comprise an informal stratigraphic record. Pollen analysis was undertaken to document prehistoric vegetation during the time represented by these sediments and to examine the metate surface for evidence of food processing.
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT 48SU1144 AND 48SU1172, SOUTHWESTERN WYOMING (1990)
One pollen and one macrofloral sample were selected for analysis from 48SU1144, while one pollen and three macrofloral samples were examined from 48SU1172. Groundstone was washed for pollen from both sites. Pollen and macrofloral analyses concentrated on identification of remains that would indicate subsistence activities at this site.
POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT THE MAXON RANCH SITE, 48SW2590, WYOMING (2003)
The Maxon Ranch site (48SW2590), located along the south-southwestern flank of Miller Mountain at an elevation of 2225-2285m (7300-7500 ft.), contained evidence of four occupations. Excavations in 1984 by Western Wyoming College yielded evidence of four cultural components ranging in age from at least 7000 years ago to the Late Prehistoric. Radiocarbon ages obtained from several isolated pit features, as well as two semi-subterranean habitation structures, ranged from 6480 ± 90 (Cultural...
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS FOR SITE 35JE355, DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON (2007)
A single piece of groundstone and an abrader from site 35JE355 were washed to recover pollen and phytoliths that might inform concerning the use of these tools. This site is located along both banks of Lake Creek, Deschutes County, Oregon, where Highway 20 crosses the creek. The Lake Creek Site complex is situated on the east side of the crest of the Mid-Oregon Cascade Range. Previously conducted radiocarbon dates place occupation of this site between approximately 2080 ± 60 BP and 3100 ±...
POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS FOR SITES 34HP70, 34HP76, 34HP131, AND 34HP138, OKLAHOMA (2003)
Pollen analysis was undertaken on samples from four archaeological sites (34HP70, 34HP76, 34HP131, and 34HP138) in the panhandle of northwest Oklahoma. A piece of groundstone and a soil control sample were examined at 34HP70 to determine what, if any, plants were ground using this tool. At site 34HP76 the floor of a pit was examined to identify possible use of the pit. A hearth at 34HP131 was examined to identify economic activity associated with this feature. Finally, at 34HP138 several...
POLLEN AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS FOR SITES 10CM294, 10EL840, 10GG137, 10GG325, 10GG480, AND 10GG702, SOUTHERN IDAHO (2005)

These sites are located in Camas, Elmore, and Gooding Counties in south-central Idaho. A mano, three pestles, and five pieces of groundstone were washed for pollen and starches to provide information concerning processing of plant resources. Six soil samples were examined for pollen to provide control samples for the...
POLLEN AND STARCH ANALYSIS OF GROUNDSTONE, MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF SOIL SAMPLES, AND PROTEIN ANALYSIS OF LITHIC ARTIFACTS FROM CA-SDI-1313/14791, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (2012)
Groundstone tools from excavation units at site CA-SDI-1313/14791 on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County, southern California, were washed to recover pollen and starches derived from processing activities. Various levels of unit fill were floated to recover macrofloral remains from subsistence activities, while three lithic tools were submitted for protein residue analysis to determine plant or animal resources that were processed with these tools. This site contains a...
