DOCUMENT Citation Only John W. Foster. Anna Rogers.

Nuestra Señora de Begoña, a Spanish merchant vessel bound from Caracas to Tenerife, was wrecked at La Caleta in the Dominican Republic in 1725. An investigation of the incident resulted in charges being brought against Captain Don Theodoro de Salazar and his conviction of silver smuggling. Contemporary salvage of the Begoña cargo was only partially successful, but some 21,000 pesos in silver were recovered including "six talegas found under the captian's bed."  Only 8,761 pesos were...

Teaching With and For the Recent Past: Applying Contemporary Archaeology Pedagogically (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Rebecca S Graff.

From abandoned council flats to the World Trade Center site, scholars are attempting to understand the material remains of the very recent past by using the methodology of archaeological "excavation." These archaeologies of the contemporary past make familiar items unfamiliar as they explore material residues of late capitalist, post-industrial societies and beyond, participating in what Holtorf calls the merging of "archaeology in the modern world with the archaeology of the modern world." The...

Testing for Mass Processing in Archaeological Ungulate Remains (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Martina Steffen.

Archaeological applications of ethnographic models require that variables derived from the activities of living people be translated into archaeological terms. Enloe suggested that processing caribou (Rangifer tarandus) carcasses for food storage should be recognizable in patterns of bone fragmentation. He predicted that relatively uniform and large-sized bone fragments would result from mass processing for marrow as part of logistic collector subsistence strategies, compared with smaller and...

Tracking dogs across the Pacific using ancient mitogenomes (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Karen Greig. Elizabeth Matisoo-Smith. Richard Walter.

Dogs were introduced to the islands of Australasia and the Pacific during human migrations and colonisations, but the timing and dispersal routes are unclear. To investigate these Oceanic dog introductions and movements, we generated complete or near complete ancient mitochondrial genomes from archaeological dog specimens from Thailand, Island Southeast Asia and Pacific islands, and from modern dingoes. When combined with additional published complete mitogenome sequences from modern dogs from...

Traditional Dena’ina Land Use at the Cottonwood Creek Village Site, Southcentral Alaska (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Joanna Wells. Kathryn Krasinski. David Yesner. Fran Seager-Boss.

The Dena’ina and Ahtna developed a sedentary socioeconomically-stratified lifestyle with material inequality by the time of European contact. The development of permanent villages indicates a shift into a complex society with qeshqas (leaders) who had better food, larger houses, and more wealth. Semisubterranean depressions at Cottonwood Creek, ranging from 802 years cal BP to modern age, are remnants of storage and house pits still present on the landscape. Geochemical testing of sediments has...

Unearthing Scandinavia’s Colonial Past (2016)

In the recent years colonialism has been a subject of debate and new research in Scandinavian historical and anthropological scholarship. This scholarship is scrutinizing the impact of colonial expansion on societies in Scandinavia as well as the role and participation of the Swedish and Danish kingdoms in the colonial enterprises. Detailed first-hand mapping of streets...

The use of fingers and hands in mark-making in caves in the indigenous Caribbean (2016)

The focus of this paper is on the actions of human fingers, hands, and bodies in the emergence and creation of the extraordinary subterranean cavescapes of Isla de Mona in the pre-Columbian and early colonial Caribbean. The interiors of around 30 of the island’s 200 caves have been extensively modified by scraping substances off, and applying substances to cave walls, leaving marks, extractive patches, meanders, and designs on hundreds of square metres of cave surfaces.
