A River Runs Through It: Archaeology along the Lower Mississippi River in Southern Louisiana (2023)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Paul Jackson. Steven J. Filoromo.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Port of Call: Archaeologies of Labor and Movement through Ports", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Evidence of this usage is still available in the floodplains and...

A Roman "House"?: A New Model for Understanding the Origins of the Roman Gens (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Matthew Naglak. Parrish Wright.

Debate concerning the development and origins of the Roman kinship group known as the gens has a long and contentious history. Theses questions, however, necessarily move beyond the primary textual evidence, the standard resource for such studies. Different heuristic models must be utilized to take advantage of all available data, whether it be textual, archaeological, or via ethnographic comparison. I propose the concept of a "house society" as developed by Lévi-Strauss and taken up by numerous...

DOCUMENT Citation Only Charlotte Goudge.

A great deal of research has been undertaken on the slave trade, sugar and the African diaspora, however, the impact of rum has garnered little attention from scholars.  Rum was an important social and economic catalyst during the 17th-20th centuries, impacting all strata of society from the lowest slaves to the highest echelons of British society. During the 18th and 19th centuries rum developed from a waste product into highly desirable merchandise that was used as a social lubrication to ease...

Seeing Native Histories in Post-Mission California (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Tsim D Schneider.

Conventional archaeological and historical accounts of Spanish missions, Russian and Mexican mercantile enterprises, and American settler colonialism in California have overemphasized the loss experienced by indigenous Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo communities who encountered these diverse colonial programs. The story of loss found in many accounts contrasts sharply with the casino – a symbol of tribal prosperity – established by the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo community in 2013. Each...
