The major objective of this report is to “Conduce Research to Describe the Historical Character and Use of the Grand Portage.” This information will become a portion of a comprehensive holistic Trail Management Plan for the Grand Portage. The Scope of Work for this project lists and discusses a series of ten areas of research that relate directly to the history and uses of the portaqe over a time period of about two centuries from late prehistoric times to the early 19th century (c. 1600-1825).

Due to the nature of the find, any contextual analysis of the artifact would be purely speculative. The bayonet was recovered from a deep excavation pit which contained several layers of artificial fill which had, over time, been added on top of the natural strata of the original ground surface. On Thursday, October 22nd 2009, Fort Lee archaeologists were asked to report to the construction area off of Carver Avenue between Sisisky and 5th Avenues. After arriving at the site, the archaeologist recovered a heavily corroded bayonet which had been inadvertently excavated by heavy machinery. Salvage excavations at a site (16EBR64) on the property of the Georgia Pacific Mill near Port Hudson, Louisiana were performed by Steven Smith of the Louisiana Division of Archaeology. Construction of new facilities uncovered a bayonet and some bone fragments. Two 1x2 meter test units revealed that the site has been thoroughly disturbed and further work would not be recommended.
