For a variety of historical reasons, the interdisciplinary field of innovation diffusion research has been underutilized by archaeologists examining technological change. Yet there is much to be gained by engaging with the predictive models produced by hundreds of investigations of technology adoption. Using the case of iron adoption in Western Asia, I demonstrate how an approach utilizing these concepts, with some modifications, provide a more complete perspective on technological change. ...

"A burden of one’s own choice is not felt": observing ceramic production technology, exchange and consumption in the Late Mycenaean Saronic Gulf. (2015)
It is widely recognized that Mycenaean states varied in their structure and organisation, were linked to different types of crafting industries, a range of trade networks and a host of consumer preferences. The Saronic Gulf is a paradoxical space that physically separates Mycenaean geopolitical states/regions, while its waters facilitate the interregional movement of people, goods and ideas. The application of thin section petrography and INAA to observe the movement of pottery, the most...
Cabins, Households, and Families: The Multiple Loci of Pooled Production at James Madison's Montpelier (2016)
The lives of the members of the enslaved community at James Madison’s plantation in Virginia, Montpelier, were shaped by the types of work they were expected to do in order to keep the president’s mansion and farm running smoothly. Recent work by historical demographers has highlighted the importance of pooling resources within households, with members each contributing the results of their production activities to the group. Archaeological excavations at several different early 19th century...
Ceramic Production on Barbados Plantations: Seasonality Explored (2016)
The fragments of unglazed red earthenware vessels used in the production of sugar and identified as ceramic sugarwares, were frequently used by plantations for processing and curing sugar and collecting molasses, and were a common sight on Barbadian plantations from the seventeenth into the late nineteenth centuries. The local production of these wares occurred in potteries operated by plantations along the east coast of Barbados. Planters managed these potteries while the workers themselves...

Over most of this period, the city, its industries, and its hinterland population thrived. Using multiple lines of evidence, both material and environmental, this paper explores what we know about changes in the organization of different production spheres at Gordion in order to understand how changing...
Contaminated: Archaeological Perspectives on Adulterated Alcohol Products in Turn-of-the-Century America (2021)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Archaeology of Meat and Ale (General Sessions)" , at the 2021 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. During the Covid-19 epidemic, high demand for alcohol-based hand sanitizer has resulted in products contaminated with toxic adulterants such as methanol. Whether the contamination was intentional or accidental, there are historic parallels where contaminated alcohol was produced, sold, and consumed. This paper explores some of...

Fragile Narratives: Rewriting Ceramic History (2013)
The production process represents the beginning of the life of material things. In this paper I shall argue that the archaeology of pottery production sites is more than ‘industrial archaeology’ in the traditional sense of the term, but rather the archaeology of industrial production in the widest sense. The evidence derived from ceramic waste recovered from production site excavations informs an understanding of the life cycles of those products which progressed beyond the factory gate to the...
The Industry of Empire: Investigating the Spatial and Technological Organization of Angkorian Iron Production around Phnom Dek, Cambodia (2017)
Intensive surveys around Phnom Dek, the ‘Iron Mountain’, in central Cambodia have revealed the presence of a massive iron production landscape dating between the 9th and 20th centuries. Using a combination of site morphology, spatial distribution, field pXRF analysis and in-slag radiocarbon datin,g this paper attempts to reconstruct these industrial-scale iron smelting practices with particular emphasis on the Angkorian period (9th to 13th c.). The results will inform on the localized...

Large-Scale Production of Basic Commodities at Salinas de los Nueve Cerros, Guatemala: Implications for Ancient Maya Political Economy (2016)
Salinas de los Nueve Cerros is a major Precolumbian Maya city that grew around the only non-coastal salt source in the Maya lowlands. Residents of the city were able to transform the neighborhoods adjacent to and atop the salt dome into a large-scale production operation with the capacity to produce over 10,000 metric tons of salt a year, which were then distributed throughout the western lowlands via the Chixoy, Pasión, and Usumacinta river networks. By the Late Classic period, the city had...
The Many Face(t)s Of the Bartmann Jug (2023)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Bartmann Goes Global - Exploring the Cultural Contexts, Meaning and Use of Bellarmine Jugs Across the Globe", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Due to its high production numbers and widespread distribution, many scholars who study early modern ceramics are familiar with the Bartmann Jug in one way or another. Nevertheless, it remains a phenomenon that is difficult to grasp: depending on place and time, the...

In A.D. 756, Ruler 15 of Copán, Honduras—a Classic Maya settlement—erected Stela M in front of the Hieroglyphic Staircase as a permanent marker of a calendrical event – the 9.16.5.0.0 Period Ending. As part of the ritual ceremony conducted at the time of the stela’s dedication, offerings were placed under the stela to activate or ensoul the monument. In a recent study of the ceramics from this offering conducted at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, the...
"…Much improved in fashion, neatness and utility": The Development of the Philadelphia Ceramic Industry, 1700-1800 (2016)
The potting industry of Philadelphia has a long and storied past, beginning in the late 17th century with William Crews, the first documented potter in the city. More than fifty years of archaeological research has provided incredible insight into the ceramics industry of Philadelphia, not only in terms of available wares, but also the role Philadelphia ceramics played in the early American marketplace. This presentation explores the 18th century development and diversity of the Philadelphia...
Portuguese olive jars. Production and distribution (2018)
For many years, archaeologists believed that the type of jar known as an 'olive jar' was exclusively made in Southern Spain. The possibility that Portuguese kilns also produced these jars was not considered, despite these botijas, being frequent references in Portuguese documents, particularly in reference to ships' cargos. Until recently only a few olive jar sherds had been recovered in Portugal and, although we suspected a possible production due to the similarities between some olive jar...
Producing an Empire: Household Production and Market Expansion at Postclassic and Colonial Xaltocan, Mexico (2016)
Archaeologists have long been interested in household production and consumption, regional economic interactions, and the development and expansion of trade networks, particularly with the rise of states and empires. This research, however, has often focused on top-down political-economic processes in which state-level elite actors condition economic activity. Put simply, “states”—and by extension, their leaders—intensify household craft production, facilitate exchange, and redirect the flow of...
