This report presents the results of field investigations of site LA 153888 (AR 05-855) at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) in the Manzanita Mountains on lands withdrawn from the Cibola National Forest and managed by the Department of Defense (DoD). The site was investigated to learn the extent of the damage from the skid trails and to determine the best method for protecting the site from further erosion. Kirtland Air Force Base is the location of abundant archaeological sites found in the Manzanita Mountains and lower slopes east of the Rio Grande. The goal in this study is the development of a geoarchaeologic model identifying the depositional units of Quaternary age at Kirtland Air Force Base that may preserve buried cultural deposits. This report presents the results of a cultural resources update and testing project of 45 sites at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) to determine their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). One new site (LA 153888) was discovered. Analysis of the results of subsurface testing, surface investigation and archival research resulted in National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibly recommendations for each of the 45 sites.
