Kirtland Air Force Base Geoarchaeologic Landform Analysis Project (GLAP), Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Summary

Kirtland Air Force Base is the location of abundant archaeological sites found in the Manzanita Mountains and lower slopes east of the Rio Grande. The goal in this study is the development of a geoarchaeologic model identifying the depositional units of Quaternary age at Kirtland Air Force Base that may preserve buried cultural deposits. The model utilizes the geologic mapping results from previous studies and identifies additional Quaternary units in areas where this information was missing. Where exposures were available, several of the units are investigated and described in terms of soil development, topographic relief, thickness and geologic position in relation to other units. Age determinations were obtained on several of the deposits within these units and include the discovery of artifacts and paleontological specimens. Late Pleistocene fauna are found in the older alluvium (Qay) and along Coyote Canyon and the skull of Bison occidentalis dating from 5600 to 5700 BP was found eroding from thick alluvial (Qa2) deposits in Tijeras Arroyo. Additional bison bones are preserved in middle to late Holocene alluvial deposit in Coyote Canyon including the discovery of a new prehistoric site concealed in buried spring channel deposits. Examination of arroyo cutbanks combined with limited backhoe trenching provides additional information on Holocene alluvial sequences inset into the upper piedmonts. The data obtained in this study combines the available geologic and geomorphic investigations in the area to create the geomorphic landform analysis project. The result is an effective model to guide cultural resource land mangers on how to best locate and protect buried cultural resources.
