This study examines the historic land use patterns on what is now Kirtland Air Force Base and adjacent lands withdrawn from public use on the Cibola National Forest. The study summarizes prehistoric Native American, Spanish Colonial, and early American land use, while focusing on late Territorial (post 1880) homesteading, mining, and suburban development on this portion of the East Mesa located southeast of the city of Albuquerque.
Kirtland Air Force Base 1981C Archaeological Survey Project, Bernalillo County, New Mexico (1981)
The results of an intensive archaeological survey of 6,187 acres of Kirtland Air Force Base are reported by the Center for Anthropological Studies. A total of 983 isolated artifactual loci yielded 1,138 artifacts of either stone, pottery, glass, or metal. Two archaeological sites and eastern portions of a third one were located, recorded, and sampled for artifacts.
