Summary
The results of an intensive archaeological survey of 6,187 acres of Kirtland Air Force Base are reported by the Center for Anthropological Studies. A total of 983 isolated artifactual loci yielded 1,138 artifacts of either stone, pottery, glass, or metal. Two archaeological sites and eastern portions of a third one were located, recorded, and sampled for artifacts. The first of them, designated as NM 0:3:1:38 (CAS), is a lithic workshop tentatively assigned to the late Archaic period (1000 B.C. - A.D. 1). The second site, NM 0:3:1:37 (CAS), is a shepherd camp believed to have been temporarily occupied between about 1900 and 1930. The third site -- the McCormick Ranch, is a major ranching complex that was designated as NM 0:2:2:5 (CAS). It is characterized by major domestic and ranching structures that exist west of the immediate survey area, but it does include five historic roads that were encountered during survey. Collectively, the project cultural resources indicate that hunting and gathering were predominant prehistoric activities undertaken between 1000 B.C. - A.D. 1 and A.D. 1200-1450. During historic times, the area was used mainly for grazing sheep and cattle between 1890 and 1930.
